Woman Accidentally Shoots Fiance at Gun Range, When Hot Casing Falls in Her Shirt

Investigators said the woman apparently panicked when she felt a hot casing land inside her shirt, when she and her fiance were target practicing.

A woman accidentally shot her fiance in the thigh at a gun range Saturday, when a hot casing landed inside her shirt, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said that the couple was with a large group of people target practicing at the Logue Road Gun Range. The unidentified woman was firing a Taurus Model 1911 .45, when a casing ejected and landed inside her shirt, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

She reacted to keep the hot casing off of her by bending over and trying to brush the casing out of her shirt. When she did, she unknowingly brought the firearm in and pointed it down at the victim's leg and accidentally discharged another round.

The round struck the victim in his right leg in the upper thigh and exited lower down his thigh.

     The victim received immediate treatment and was then transported to Manatee Memorial Hospital for further treatment. His wound is not life-threatening and he is expected to be discharged later today.

     An independent witness was located at the gun range, along with several of the people that were in the group. All accounts of the incident are consistent with the information provided by the victim and his fiance. By all information provided, this incident is an accidental discharge and shooting.
