Body of Missing Swimmer Found Drowned at Anna Maria Beach

Rescuers in boats and helicopters began searching for a teen swimmer swept into the Gulf of Mexico Saturday evening, but suspended the search until visibility improves Sunday morning.

Update July 7, 2013, 9:56 a.m.:
Manatee Sheriff's deputies located the body of the missing teen swimmer Dushay Nelson early Sunday, not far from where he was pulled under by a current around 4:30 p.m. July 6 at Anna Maria City Park beach. 

Deputies from the Manatee County Sheriff's Marine Unit found the boy's drowned body at approximately 9 a.m. July 7. Rescuers initially alerted media that the drowning victim's name was Dushay Morales, as originally reported by Patch. But deputies report that they have since confirmed with the victim's family that his correct last name is Nelson.

Rescuers suspended their search for missing swimmer Dushay Nelson until Sunday morning, authorities report. Nelson was in the area visiting from Winter Haven with his family when a current swept him under the water at Anna Maria City Park beach Saturday evening.

Rescuers Launch Boat, Helicopter Search for Missing Swimmer

Rescuers in boats and helicopters are searching for a teen swimmer swept into the Gulf of Mexico Saturday evening.

Witnesses report seeing a 14-year-old boy swimming in knee-deep water on the Gulf of Mexico, near the end of Willow Avenue at Anna Maria City Park beach, disappear as he was swept under the water by a current, officials report.

Manatee County Sheriff's Office received the 911 call at about 4:30 p.m. Deputies immediately contacted the U.S. Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg.

The boy, Dushay Nelson, was last seen wearing a a light blue swimsuit, Coast Guard officials report.

A 25-foot response boat with a small crew from Coast Guard Station Cortez and a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew from Air Station Clearwater are actively searching for Nelson. 

Assisting in search efforts are West Manatee Fire Rescue, Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, Florida State Law Enforcement, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and lifeguards from the beach.

Another boy who was with Nelson was also caught in the current but was able to get to shore, sheriff's report. He is reportedly doing OK. 

Rescuers ask that anyone with information of the boy's location is asked to contact Coast Guard watchstanders at 727-824-7506.
