Man on Death Row for Killing Officer Loses Appeal

Daniel Burns fatally shot Trooper Jeff Young. The court decision may allow his execution to move forward.

The man who shot and killed Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Jeff Young during a traffic stop on a bridge over the Manatee River has lost a court appeal that could have further delayed his execution.

Bradenton.com reports that a petition filed by Daniel Burns in the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has been turned down.

Burns has been on death row for 25 years for fatally shooting Young on Aug. 18, 1987.

"Two suspects were en route to Detroit, Michigan, on I 75 when they were stopped by Trooper Young. Consent was given to search the vehicle, during which Trooper Young discovered a substantial amount of cocaine. A violent struggle between the Trooper and suspects ensued and the one of the suspects gained control of Trooper Young's revolver and shot him in the face at point blank range."
