Man Crashes into Patrol Car; Blows Four Times Legal Alcohol Limit

A man who blew more than four times the legal alcohol limit was arrested Wednesday after he ran into the back of a Sarasota County Sheriff's Office patrol car, and then tried to drive away.

Deputy Todd Mitchell was at Center Road and Rockley Boulevard at 8:07 a.m., when another car struck the rear of the vehicle, and then drove around the car and tried to leave the scene, according to the report. Mitchell was not injured in the crash.

The 26-year-old driver, John Tauber, 400 block of Menendez Road, smelled of alcohol and nearly fell over into traffic, the report said.

Tauber was reportedly belligerent to deputies; he claimed he hadn’t been drinking and refused to perform standard field sobriety tests, the report said. However, once he was taken to jail and took the breath test he blew a .353 and .365, with the legal limit being .08.
