Man Charged With Teen's Murder

The teenager was left to die in the street after being shot.

Manatee County detectives arrested a 20-year old man in connection with the shooting death of a 19-year-old left in the street to die.

Detectives have arrested Kwame Henri, 20, and charged him with murder, according to a Manatee County Sheriff's report. Henri is accused of shooting Kenya Cox, 19, and leaving him in the middle of 27th Avenue east where he died.

Cox was found shot to death last Friday after his aunt called 9-1-1 to report that someone was lying in the street and appeared to be injured. His murder was the fourth Manatee County killing in 2012.

Manatee County detectives said that Cox was at Henri’s residence at 1711 27th Ave. E., on January 20, the night he was killed. They learned that Cox and Henri were talking outside of the house and then started wrestling. After the pair began wrestling someone in the neighborhood heard a gunshot and Cox fell to the ground.

Henri was arrested Monday night. He remains in the Manatee County jail where he is also charged with drug possession.

I am glad Detectives were able to make a quick arrest in this incident, probably due in part that this was a domestic related murder. I have dealt with Kwame Henry while I was a detective with the Manatee County Sheriff's Office. As a juvenile he had a violent history of robberies and petty drug charges. He has been on probation and had plenty of opportunites of getting his act together and in becoming a productive citizen. There are no more intervention programs or rehab opportunities that will ever turn Henry into a productive citizen. He desrves to spend the rest of his life in Prison where he will not be able to harm another innocent civilian. I pray that the State Attorney's Office doesn't allow this homicide to be turned into another self-defense folly like several of the other criminal on criminal murders in Manatee County.

As a former teacher and director of Gulf Coast Marine Institute I agree wholeheartedly. Lost 4 of my kids to deaths, 1 to life, 2 to 25 years, 1 suicide, and lost track of how many I read about in the paper even today. Seems like a hopeless cause sometimes. There are no rehab opportunities or intervention program that help most of these kids. I think it has to boil down to Mom and Pop. Plus NO DRIVERS LICENSE unless you graduate. Need to tighten up schools also.

Very enlightening comments above from both posters. Dogpatch nailed the root cause; "it has to boil down to Mom and Pop". Unfortunately, dysfunctionality seems to have become the norm in all too many "families" in Manatee County to the point where so many are left feeling they have no family and seek the attention elsewhere (committing crimes, joining gangs). They have lost self-respect and self-worth and feel they've nothing to lose.

It boils down to mom and pop but if mom and pop upholds the child in the crime they are commiting then they are useless and deserve to get the same punishment. Thats the problem a lot of parents know what their kids are doing and say nothing because they are reaping the benefits of the crime. No Morales

I personally knew Kenya. He was a good kid I couldn't believe he was dead. It does prove the surrounding neighborhood can play a role in are lives. R.I.P. Kenya
