Roser Church Concert Series—Sarasota Orchestra Brass Quintet

The 2014 Roser Community Church Concert Series continues with the Sarasota Orchestra Brass Quintet on Saturday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m. Founded in 1986, the Sarasota Brass Quintet (formerly the Florida Brass Quintet) has established itself as one of the best-known ensembles of the Sarasota Orchestra. The Quintet performs chamber music and has performed throughout Florida, from the Panhandle to the Keys. The group also performs in and works with students from schools throughout Sarasota and Manatee Counties. No tickets are required; doors open one hour before the performance; free-will offerings will be accepted.

The concert begins with Ewald’s brass quintet containing folk melodies native to Northern Russia. Next is a mixture of work by Mohammed Fairouz. Fairouz’s mixture of eastern and western idioms is a thrilling contemporary composition. The final piece in the concert displays a lighter side of Jan Bach's imperishable genius. Bach’s primary performing instrument is the horn, and he is especially renowned for his horn pieces and especially well known among hornists. According to the New Grove Dictionary of Music “a predominant aspect of Bach’s work is his charming and inexhaustible sense of humor.”

A leader in the arts community, the Sarasota Orchestra has a dual mission dedicated to exquisite performance and first-class musical education. The acclaimed music education program includes the 50-year old Youth Orchestra. They also offer music lessons for students of all ages and abilities.
