Snow in August

         In
this enchanting drama based on a novel by Pete Hamill, eleven-year-old Michael
is a fatherless Irish Catholic boy living in 1947 Brooklyn with his mother
(Lolita Davidovich). He witnesses the beating of a Jewish candy storeowner by a
gang of anti-Semitic toughs.  Fearing for
his and his mother’s safety, he doesn’t reveal the identity of  the vicious gang leader.
As
this weighs on his conscience, he meets Rabbi Judah Hirsch (Stephen Rea), a
lonely refugee from Prague who hires him to become a Shabbos goy.  They become unlikely friends; Judah
fascinates Michael with tales from Jewish folklore especially about the Golem,
and Michael gives Judah a crash course in the finer points of baseball.
Sadly,
the same hatred that took away his wife in Nazi Europe eventually overtakes
Rabbi Hirsch and even touches Michael's mother. As Judah's life lies in the
balance, Michael wonders if Judah's tales of magic and mysticism might hold a
key to getting justice for his friend.
