You Might Want to Avoid These Roads

The department of transportation has reported road construction and lane closures at the following locations; motorists are urged to take precaution.

Construction Project at I-75 Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and Satellite Traffic Management Center:  Work continues to install closed-circuit television cameras, dynamic message signs, road weather information systems, highway advisory radio, non-intrusive microwave vehicle detectors, emergency generator back-up system and fiber optics communications cable and transmission equipment along 56 miles of I-75 from the Sarasota/Manatee County line (University Parkway) to the I-275 interchange in Manatee County (near mile marker 228). During the week of Sunday, August 18, crews will be working on pull box installation at various locations between mile markers 213 and 228.  No lane closures are expected for the pull box installation. Beginning the week of Sunday, August 25 through September 13, motorists should anticipate nightly one lane closures on northbound I-75 between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. at mile markers 222 and 224 for conduit installation.  This work will take place Monday through Thursday nights. This project is scheduled for completion in summer 2014. The contractor is World Fiber Technologies, Inc.


Construction Project on I-75 over the Manatee River: Construction project: This project consists of replacing the bridge fender system and navigational lighting under the bridge. There will be no impacts to the traffic on the bridge as all work is being performed beneath the bridge. The project is scheduled for completion in spring 2014.

Maintenance Permit Project on I-75: Motorists should be aware of crews working near the shoulder for the next several weeks. No lane closures will be in place but motorists should use caution.

Maintenance Project on US 41 at Moccasin Wallow Road: There will be intermittent outside northbound lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through August 16 while crews construct a driveway and right turn lane. Motorists are advised to use caution and to expect possible delays.

Construction Project US 41 from 73rd Street to the I-275 ramp: This project consists of replacing the railroad tracks and reconstructing the railroad crossing, minor drainage improvements and signing and pavement markings. There will be northbound and southbound single lane closures 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. in order to implement the traffic shifts. Northbound and southbound traffic shifts will occur while crews are replacing the railroad tracks. The speed limit will be reduced to 50 mph when traffic shifts are in effect. Motorists are advised to use caution while in the area and to expect possible delays. Project completion is anticipated in fall 2013. The contractor is Gibbs & Register, Inc.

Maintenance project at US 41 from the Sarasota county line to Braden Avenue: Motorists should expect an intermittent northbound lane closure nightly from 6 p.m. to 11 a.m. through Monday, August 26 for sidewalk repairs. Motorists are advised to use caution and expect possible delays. This closure will also impact pedestrian traffic. Pedestrian traffic will be diverted to the opposite side of the street at existing pedestrian crosswalks.

Maintenance Project at US 41 from 85th Street to the Midway Flea Market:  Motorists should expect intermittent northbound left lane closures from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, August 19 through Tuesday August 20 while crews make repairs to the roadway surface.  Motorists are advised to use caution and expect possible delays.

Maintenance Project at BUS US 41 between 8th Avenue West and 16th Avenue West:  Motorists should expect an intermittent southbound outside lane closure from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through August 16. Contractor crews will be replacing poles and doing maintenance to electric lines.  Motorists are advised to use caution and expect possible delays.

Maintenance Project SR 684 (Cortez Road) eastbound and westbound from 51st Street to 26th Street: Crews are inspecting and repairing the drainage pipes. Motorists should expect an outside lane closure from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. through September 22, weather permitting.  Motorists are also advised to use caution while in the area and expect possible delays.

Maintenance Project at SR 70 from Tara Creek Boulevard to US 301: Maintenance contract project:  Crews are working nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. to remove and replace the roadway markings. Work continues through the end of the month. Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures throughout these areas and motorists should be advised to use caution traveling through the work zone.

Maintenance Project on SR 70 from 39th Street E to Lockwood Ridge Road: Maintenance permit project: There will be intermittent eastbound outside lane closures beginning August 20 through August 30 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day while crews construct curb and gutter. Motorists are advised to use caution while in the area and to expect possible delays.

Construction Project at SR 64 from west of Carlton Arms Boulevard to west of Interstate 75: Work continues Monday through Saturday resurfacing the existing roadway and expanding the roadway from four to six lanes. Work also includes adding five-foot paved bike lanes, building curb and gutter with drainage swales, constructing sidewalk, and replacing existing traffic signals with mast arms and concrete poles. The left turn lane on eastbound SR 64 into Rivers Edge Shopping Plaza will be closed through August 26. Motorists are advised to use caution and watch for construction workers in the construction zone. Project completion is expected in fall 2013. The contractor is Better Roads, Inc.
