Q&A: Southeast Senior Had Best Four Years of Life

Patrick Broder, set to graduate Wednesday, says he likes the school spirit at Southeast.

Name: Patrick Broder. Age: 18. School: Senior at Southeast High (graduates Wednesday). What do you like about Southeast High?: I like our school spirit. The past four years have been the best four years of my life. And it's definitely fun playing football. What do you dislike about Southeast High?: Our enrollment is low so it's hard to compete (in football) with schools like Manatee. What do you like about Bradenton?: It 's a good-size town — not too big and not too small. What do you wish people knew about your school?: Some people stereotype it as having bad people. But some of the smartest and nicest people are from here. Everyone knows Southeast got a 'D' as a school rating, but we have some really good teachers.

If You Go: Southeast Spring Football Game

A look at the Noles' spring game this Friday against Venice.

Who: Venice High at Southeast High. What: Spring football game. When: 7:30 p.m. Friday. Where: John Kiker Memorial Stadium in Bradenton. Noles update: Coach Paul Maechtle's squad went 8-2 last year during the regular season and won two playoff games by a combined two points before falling to South Fort Myers in the Class 3A-Region 3 final. Southeast loses a bevy of talent from last year's team, most notably linebacker Desmond Blue, named defensive player of the year by both the Bradenton Herald and Sarasota Herald-Tribune and now headed to Fort Scott Community College in Kansas. This year's team doesn't lack for talent, though, led by highly recruited defensive back Brian Poole, who will play in the 2012 Under Armour All-American Game in …

Cox, Southeast Advance to 3A-3 Baseball Semifinals

Senior Cameron Cox hit two home runs and recorded the save in Tuesday night's 5-3 victory over visiting Island Coast.

When the late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner called Dave Winfield “Mr. May,” it wasn’t meant as a term of endearment. However, any high school baseball player would gladly embrace the moniker since May represents playoff time in the state of Florida. If Tuesday night was any indication, Southeast High senior Cameron Cox may just be the Seminoles’ “Mr. May.” Cox accounted for all five of Southeast’s runs by hitting a pair of home runs before he was called to the mound in the top of the seventh inning to close out visiting Cape Coral Island Coast in the Class 3A-Region 3 quarterfinals. As soon as Cox retired the third batter he faced, the Seminoles were celebrating a 5-3 victory and preparing for Friday night’s semifinal in Fort …

How does it feel to win a district championship?: Nothing compares. It feels great. It hadn't happened in (his) four years, but it felt like it was going to happen (on Thursday night against Cardinal Mooney). Everything went right for us. Is this your greatest baseball memory?: Yes, it is. What was the former No. 1 (baseball memory)?: I would have to say playing with great kids in other tournaments. (Players) that I never thought I would be good enough to play with. How long have you played baseball?: Ever since I could walk. What other sports did you play growing up?: Football and basketball. Did you have to make the decision to specialize in baseball once you reached high school?: This was my first year that I only played baseball. What …

Ramirez Pitches Southeast To 3A-11 Baseball Crown

Senior right-hander honored his grandmother's memory by striking out 12 in Thursday night's 2-0 win over Cardinal Mooney.

Thelma Meyers never complained about all the pitching that she did, so her grandson, Andy Ramirez, was not about to let fatigue get in the way of the Southeast High baseball program's fourth district championship. The last of Ramirez's 131 pitches on Thursday night eluded Cardinal Mooney first baseman Jason Sierra's bat and enabled the Seminoles to celebrate a 2-0 victory in the Class 3A-District 11 title game. As players converged upon the mound and engulfed Ramirez, Meyers most likely never lost sight of her grandson as she looked down upon Southeast's home field. "I just went out there and just gave it my all," Ramirez said. "It was all for my grandma. It's been a long time since we won districts. This is our dream. We were going to try…

Manatee Girls Get Shutout Win Over Southeast, Day Off

The visiting Hurricanes controlled most of the 80 minutes and only gave up one shot in Monday's 4-0 win.

Missed opportunities did not keep the Manatee High girls soccer team from earning a 4-0 victory over host Southeast High on Monday night or a day off from practice. The Hurricanes played most of the 80 minutes in the Seminoles’ half of the field and only conceded one shot in the non-district match at John Kiker Memorial Stadium. Freshman Jessalyn Kinlaw scored the game’s first two goals, junior Meredith Argeros made it 3-0 in the 34th minute, and senior Julia Pignanelli capped the scoring in the 68th minute. Manatee had six shots on goal and eight total shots in a second half. Pignanelli’s scoring boot was by far the farthest of all the second-half shots as it came from about 25 yards out. “We definitely missed opportunities, but that wasn…
