She was kept under wraps for weeks by school administrators.
About 4:30 in the afternoon of Jan. 5, Cynthia Futch was driving an empty school bus back to the barn when she saw something horrifying: A bus full of students headed in the opposite direction on State Road 64 was out of control. The bus had just rear-ended a semi, pinning the school bus driver’s legs. He couldn’t apply the brakes or work the ignition. Three men in orange shirts from Clear Sunset Car Wash chased the bus. One of them, Sammy Long, a former paratrooper, jumped aboard to apply the brakes and steer on to a grassy shoulder. Two others hung on to the side mirrors to try to slow the bus. The bus driver who hit the back of a tractor trailer was dismissed after he was found at fault for the accident that sent two dozen students to area hospitals.
The school bus driver who ran into the back of a tractor trailer on Thursday afternoon was dismissed Friday, after the Florida Highway Patrol and school officials reviewed video of the accident that shows the driver was at fault. Seconds before the accident, Charles Robert Orr, 68, of Palmetto, was seen on the video handing a piece of paper back to a student behind him. After he passes the note back, students on the bus scream to watch out. They clearly are warning the driver that he is about to crash. District officials say that the school bus was traveling at 34 mph right before the crash, according to records taken by a GPS. The impact of the crash pushed the bus firewall in and up against the brake pedal, not allowing it to fully …

Would you 2 be saying the same kind words if the outcome was worse? There comes a time when driving priviledges are just that, a priviledge to be in control of a deadly weapon. Seriously, the school board should have age restrictions and safety reaction time guidelines. Glad my kids aren't on a bus to get to school...   more ›
