Child's Driveway Death Caused by Vehicle Malfunctions, Investigators Say

The accident was blamed on failed brakes and a transmission that didn't work.

The Florida Highway Patrol blamed vehicle malfunctions, including failing brakes, on a recent accident that killed a 4-year-old girl in her driveway. The Florida Highway Patrol's investigation found that the 1992 Lexus ES300 was in poor mechanical condition, which contributed to the crash that killed Daisy Martinez, 4, as she played in her family's yard. Daisy Martinez had been playing in the yard of her family's home, in the 2500 block of 38th Avenue East, when the accident happened. Child Struck, Killed as Mom Moves Car in Driveway

The four year old was playing in her yard in Samoset when she was hit by the car and pinned up against a fence.

A 23-year-old woman was moving her car in a driveway when she hit her four-year-old daughter today and pinned her body against a fence, killing her, according to report from the Florida Highway Patrol. Daisy Martinez, 4, had been playing in the yard of her family's home, in the 2500 block of 38th Avenue East, when the accident happened in the driveway. Gracie Moreno, the girl's mother, was moving her 1992 Lexus ES300 around the circular driveway when she hit the child. The accident happened after noon today. Daisy was taken by ambulance to Blake Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Sam Casimir, a neighbor, heard the mother cry: "Help, help my baby," according to an interview with Bay News 9.
