What's Tampa Bay Saying?

Tampa Bay Rays: Should St. Pete Let Go?

The Major League Baseball team says it needs a new stadium to be successful in the Bay area. Some St. Petersburg leaders insist they must stay in the city. We want to hear what you think should happen.

It’s no secret that the Tampa Bay Rays have been talking with government officials outside of St. Petersburg about the need for a new stadium. They’ve gone on a road show of sorts, talking with officials on both the Hillsborough and Pinellas county commissions. Team management has made it clear that attendance numbers need to rise for the Rays to remain viable in the Tampa Bay area. They’ve also made it abundantly clear that Major League Baseball has lost its faith in Tampa Bay. While Hillsborough and Pinellas county officials want to lend a hand to restore that faith – and possibly a location for a shiny new stadium in their own backyards – St. Pete Mayor Bill Foster is adamantly opposed to letting the team out of its contract to play at …

Well....as a fan, they should stay. But thinking of it as a business choice, they should leave st pete. No one likes driving way down there to see a game. Parking is horrible, and shouldnt be more expensive than the game. And its not really the fans fault....its how expensive concessions are at the games. People know they can spend 10 bucks to go see the game....but after a beer and a hot dog, …   more ›

What's Tampa Bay Saying?

Should the Rays Stay at The Trop?

The Tampa Bay Rays say they need a new stadium. St. Petersburg officials say the team is contractually obligated to remain at Tropicana Field for another 14 years. What do you think should happen, Tampa Bay?

It’s a brouhaha that’s been brewing in the Tampa Bay area for years: The Tampa Bay Rays say they need a new stadium. The City of St. Petersburg holds a contract that says the Major League Baseball team is obligated to play at Tropicana Field through the year 2027. Even so, the Rays haven’t been quiet about their perceived need for a newer, better stadium. A few years back, they floated the idea of building a new stadium on St. Petersburg’s waterfront. That idea was nixed in the court of public opinion. Now, team officials are planning to meet with both the Hillsborough and Pinellas County Commissions. The Hillsborough meeting, which will be open to the public, is set up for Jan. 24. The meeting with Pinellas officials takes place Jan. 29. …

Does Bob dolye SR live in Miami? Wh had a half baked team for long enough. Now they are Champinship calber. Instead of complaining about them wanting a new stadium, lets just go to a couple of games a year. If each Rays fan went to two games a year, they woiuldn't be talking about needing to find a more lucretive stadium location. That's the whole issue. It's all about attenence. It is expensive…   more ›

Evan Longoria's Viral Video Filmed at McKechnie Field

The Tampa Bay Rays star's unbelievable 'catch' in Bradenton becomes a YouTube hit.

UPDATE (May 25): The St. Petersburg Times/Miami Herald's PolitiFact Florida tried to get to the bottom of the "catch" mystery today on its Truth-O-Meter. You may have seen the video by now — Tampa Bay Rays star Evan Longoria making a too-good-to-be-true, bare-handed catch to save a reporter from getting clocked in the head. What you may or may not have noticed is the viral video, which was actually part of a Gillette Fusion commercial shoot, was filmed at Bradenton's McKechnie Field, spring training home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Longoria spent several hours in Bradenton one night in the middle of spring training filming a Gillette commercial with ESPN's Kenny Mayne, then shot the viral video in just a few minutes, said Trevor Gooby, the …

Athlete Of The Week

Athlete of the Week: Melissa Malanczuk, Braden River Softball

A three-year letter winner in golf and a four-year letter in softball, Malanczuk is the starting second baseman for the school's 2011 Class 4A-Region 3 championship team.

What sports do you play besides softball?: I played volleyball my freshman year. Then, I played golf for the rest of three years (of high school). Which sport do you like the best?: It’s between softball and golf because I have a really great passion for both. Mostly softball because I’ve been playing since I was like 7 or 8. What’s the excitement level like at school with your team winning a region championship and advancing to the Final Four?: The excitement is getting higher because we’ve made it so much farther and we are making history. It feels good to have people around school saying, 'Good luck Monday for states.' Before when we had regionals, everyone knew about it. It’s really nice to have the excitement. I think it gives us more…

Marauders Shut Out Stone Crabs, Build Upon Tradition

Friday night's 13-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays' Class-A Advanced affiliate marked the first of 70 home games for the second-year Bradenton Marauders.

There comes a time when novelty develops into tradition. For the Bradenton Marauders of the Class-A Advanced Florida State League, that may have been shortly after 5:30 p.m. Friday when Palmetto resident Jared Rife came through the McKechnie Field gates. Just as he did last year for the first game in franchise history, Rife led a pack of fans into the venerable spring training home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. “I like being the first one here and being the first one at the ballpark,” the 22-year-old Rife said. “To me, this is the real baseball experience. Being outdoors and having real grass makes you want to be the first one at the ballpark.” Rife attended 13 of the Marauders’ home games, including a Southern Division championship series …

If purchased through the city, a seat in the Party Deck, the upper level overhang in left field, is $10. There's also a new seating option this year — a seat in the lower level of left field for $17. The city has 300 tickets for sale in each section. The Rays have not announced if there will be a concert that night after the 7:10 p.m. game as part of their summer concert series, but since this is the only Saturday home…

Roster Release Fuels Anticipation For Marauders' 2011 Campaign

Florida State League's Bradenton squad unveiled its roster on Tuesday at a Pirate City luncheon.

As some of their faithful were searching the Internet or continuously refreshing the team’s Facebook site for the release of the Opening Day roster, corporate sponsors and dignitaries, including Mayor Wayne Poston, were among those to be personally introduced to the 2011 Bradenton Marauders on Tuesday at Pirate City. Upon entering a luncheon known as the “Kickoff of the Bradenton Marauders’ 2011 Season,” guests found copies of the Marauders’ 25-man roster and a press release on their tables. By the time that first-year manager and former major league infielder Carlos Garcia addressed the crowd and members of the team gave brief introductions, those online lurkers had been appeased. The Marauders will begin their second season in the Class-…
