An educational art exhibit celebrating diversity will have a special celebration Friday night before the public opening on Sunday.
The 10th annual Embracing Our Differences is set to open on Easter Sunday, when it's 80 degrees instead of the cool 60s, but some of the messages from the art might warm you up anyhow. You can start with a chill celebration Friday night from 5 to 6 p.m. at Riverwalk, 452 3rd Avenue W., followed by Music in the Park from 6 to 8 p.m. The Embracing Our Differences exhibit produced by nonprofit Coexistence Inc. blends free educational lesson plans in schools, free field trips and student art and original quotes judged in a worldwide competition. The artwork is displayed on posters, 12 1/2 feet by 16 feet, with quotations displayed beside them. For the past 10 years, the exhibit was exclusively displayed at Sarasota Bayfront Island Park. The 10th annual student art exhibit celebrates diversity and tolerance.
If all goes to plan, Bradenton will soon see the benefits of visitors coming to its waterfront just to see student artwork each year. This isn't any standard student art, however. It's huge. The artwork is displayed on billboard size posters, 12 1/2 feet by 16 feet, in an outdoor park setting. The Embracing Our Differences exhibit produced by nonprofit Coexistence Inc. blends free educational lesson plans in schools, free field trips and student art and original quotes judged in a worldwide competition. For the past 10 years, the exhibit was exclusively displayed at Sarasota Island Park. This year it will be displayed at Anthony T. Rossi Waterfront Park from March 30 to April 28, as well as Island Park from March 31 to June 2 and at North…

Concerts will be held in the Mosaic Amphitheater overlooking the Manatee River.
Update: The March 9 concert featuring the U.S. Coast Guard is canceled. The Coast Guard released the following statement: “It was not an easy decision. We further regret that the US Coast Guard Band's tour of the South (which included Bradenton) was cancelled so close to its start- however, the final decision was delayed until today under the hope that there would be some sort of resolution to sequestration. Per the Coast Guard Commandant's guidance on the Coast Guard's handling of sequestration, the service's priority during this time is to preserve those areas that best support its critical assets.” Original: Grab a blanket and some friends to unwind Friday nights along Bradenton's Riverwalk. The Music in the Park series kicks off from …

The ordinance passed the council on first reading and will come up for final approval at the next council meeting.
After more than two dozen calls for help, 83 traffic stops and 54 calls for back up at Riverwalk's skate park, officers asked the City Council for a new tool in keeping the park safe for skaters. The city council passed a first draft of a new ordinance that will allow officers to issue trespass citations at the public park that could ban certain trouble makers for as long as a year. A. J. Cerniglia, a master patrol officer with the Bradenton Police Department, was grateful to have another tool to help put an end to the problems at the skate park. He said the biggest complaint is about kids fighting. Although he said some of the skaters have reported having bkes, skate boards and back packs stolen while they are skating in the park. He said…

This weekend in downtown Bradenton is primarily about the blues, but not in a sad way. It’s the Bradenton Blues Fest and it kicks off with a teaser on Friday followed by two events on Saturday. Even though Saturday’s main event is happening on Riverwalk, we still like the idea of closing down Old Main Street on Saturday evening to coincide with the party at the park. That’s because there is easy access and bar-hopping opportunities at places we love like Old Main Pub, McCabe’s Irish Pub, Lost Kangaroo, O’Bricks Irish Pub & Martini Bar, Cork’s Cigar Bar and Distillery Tavern. And Old Main Street is where you’ll find plenty of drinks (The ‘Roo itself has more than 170 varieties of beer), cigars (Cork’s has brands like Cusano, Oliva, Romeo y …

Since its grand opening in October, the Bradenton Riverwalk has quickly established itself as the most happening place to be in Manatee County — and this weekend is certainly no exception. On Saturday, Realize Bradenton will launch one of its biggest blockbuster events of the year: the inagural Bradenton Blues Festival. The festival is slated to be an all-day affair, kicking off at 10 a.m. and ending at 8 p.m. Starting at 11 a.m., eight musical acts take their turn on the stage until the festival closes. Fans of the blues, funk, folk and soul can look forward to a star-studded lineup at the 2012 Bradenton Blues Fest, expected to be worth the $30 admission at the gate. (Tickets are $25 if purchased ahead of time online or at the Friday, Nov…
