Social Media Saves Lost Beagle – Now She Needs a Name

A Lakewood Ranch rescue group put the call out for the public to help when one of the shelter pups went missing.

Who said dogs can't have nine lives, too? One lucky beagle in Lakewood Ranch was rescued not once, but twice, thanks to the kindness of strangers. Now she needs a home – and a name. But we're getting ahead of the story. It all started Wednesday night, when Manya Paru, executive director of the Humane Society at Lakewood Ranch, issued an urgent call for help from the community. One of her charges – a young, homeless beagle in a new pink harness – saw the chance to run away from the no-kill shelter and "took off like greased lightning," as frantic workers tried to retrieve her. The rescue groups I work with all call me "a foster failure" because I take them in & fall in love & can't let them go. LOL !! Adoptable Cat of the Week: Wizard is All Personality

He's just one of the pets up for adoption at the county's downtown center.

This week's adoptable cat is Wizard, a short-hair tuxedo cat. Wizard is a two year old neutered male who will greet you when you come home. He has been with Manatee County Animal Services since February 26 when he was picked up in the 3400 block of 14th Street W. You can visit Wizard at the Manatee County Animal Services downtown adoption center this week. The downtown center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. If you adopt Wizard this month his adoption fee is just $10. All kittens are also $10 and the shelter has plenty of kittens this month. He's just one of the pets up for adoption at the county's downtown center.

This week's adoptable pet is Roger, a beautiful brindle German Shepherd mix. Roger, a one year old neutered male, is full of personality and has an expressive face. Because he's still a puppy he can be a little michievious and would beneft from some obedience training. He's a happy dog who loves attention. He has been with Manatee County Animal Services since Nov. 21, when his family brought him into the shelter. You can visit Roger at the county's downtown adoption center next week or at the Palmetto adoption center for Animal Services. This week's adoptable pet is Casper, a green-eyed beauty. Casper, is a one-and a half-year-old neutered medium-haired brown tiger. He has been with Manatee County Animal Services since Jan 7 when he was found by residents on 52nd Avenue East. He is a calm and curious cat and is ready for a permanent home. Visit Casper at the county's downtown adoption center or at the Palmetto adoption center for Animal Services this week. Teen Photo Best Depicts Manatee Life

Volunteer photographer featured on Patch last week wins the Paul Bartley photo award.

A teenager took one of the top photo awards at the Manatee County fair for his photo "Hope and Faith" a depiction of people in Manatee County. Benjamin McGraw, 13, who was featured on Patch last week for his volunteer work for the no-kill effort taking photos of animals at the Manatee County Animal shelter, won the Paul Bartley award for his photo of his sisters at the beach.  The award comes with a $50 prize. The Paul Bartley Award goes to the exhibitor with the picture that best depicts the people of Manatee County. Benjamin's winning photo can be seen here.

Humane Society’s new boutique supports animal adoption center

How often does one get to support two life-long loves on a quick outing to a neighborhood location? The newly opened 2nd Chance Boutique, 6293 Lake Osprey Drive,  satisfies your urge to shop and the desire to provide homes for all the lost animals of the world. The Boutique offers gently worn clothes a second chance while raising funds to support the Humane Society at Lakewood Ranch, which offers a second chance for adoptable dogs and cats.  “We started in October, and we all came from different backgrounds, but we are all animal lovers and rescue workers,” said Cathy Hanselman, board member and store manager. Adoptable Cats of the Week: Sam and Sandy (With Video)

They're just two of the pets up for adoption at the county's downtown center.

This week's adoptable cats are Sam and Sandy, 2-month-old kittens from the same litter. Sam is a black-and-white domestic shorthair; Sandy is brown tiger and white. They were both taken in as strays earlier this month. They love to cuddle together, as you can see here in the attached video and photos. Animal services is waiving the adoption fee for cats in June to commemorate the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month.  Throughout the month, cat adoptions will be available at no charge, a $60 value.
