How to Prevent Head Lice in Bradenton

Tips to prevent and treat head lice in children.

When children play at school and have play dates and sleepovers, the number of cases of head lice rises. That’s because head lice, tiny parasitic insects that live on the scalp, are most commonly transferred through head-to-head contact.  What should parents know and do to prevent their child from getting head lice? Here are seven important tips:  • Teach your child to avoid head-to-head contact. No sharing of brushes, combs, hats, hair accessories, scarves or towels. • Keep your child’s hair as close to the head as possible in either a ponytail, braid or bun. Using hairsprays or gels also makes it harder for lice to infest.  • Spray your child’s hair daily with a natural lice repellent. Available in drug stores, natural food stores or …

Parents Magazine Names Coquina One of Best Beaches for Families

Coquina came in at No. 7 on the magazine's list of the country's 10 best beaches for families.

Coquina Beach is a great place to bring the kids, according to a source that would know. Parents, the long-running parenting magazine and website, ranked Coquina Beach Park seventh on its top 10 list of the country's best beaches for families in its current issue. The article pointed out Coquina's famed mini seashells that give the beach its name. "Every morning, there's a row of shells on the shoreline for kids to scoop up," Debbie Meihls, executive manager of the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, told the magazine. The article also cited the opportunites for kayaking, the 1½-mile paved nature trail and the chance to see dolphins, manatees or stingrays at the beach, located on the southern tip of Anna Maria Island. It also …

Boys Vs. Girls: Which is More Difficult to Raise?

Understanding the differences between the genders.

Fire and Ice. I chose these nicknames for my kids early on. They signify the differences in not only their hair color (flaming redhead and platinum blonde), but their completely opposite personalities and mental makeup. I learned early on, from my own household observations, that my parenting tactics would need to be customized for each child. I wondered which gender would be more challenging. John Gray, author of "Men are From Mars, Women Are from Venus," started an intriguing conversation that has continued to go on for more than two decades. When did the differences between the sexes begin? Males and females are biologically and emotionally programmed completely polar of one another, commencing at conception. And although (I’m putting …

I hear both sides and I do not believe there is a 'one size fits all' answer. Boys can be emotional and girls can be demanding and vice versa. One aspect though, I can see a great disparity is in clothing them! Girls seem to be more 'work' (at an earlier age) with hair accessories, jewelry and matching clothes, etc. while boys, at least in the early stages tend not to care about matching the top …   more ›

Family Dinner Table Is Nourishment For Body, Soul

It's important to take time out of our hectic lives to share a meal together.

Six o’clock in the evening would come around and that meant one thing. Walking through the front door would be our father dressed in a suit and tie with his tattered leather briefcase in hand. His heavy footsteps would echo against the cold slate in the foyer as he sighed from a long day at work. After greeting all four of us kids, he’d walk into the kitchen, deeply inhale the wonderful aroma from whichever pot my mother had simmering on the stove, and ask, “What’s for dinner?” Dinner in the Weber household was no small feat for our mom who prepared food for a family of six every single night, but not without help. One of us would be setting the table, another making the salad, someone was putting ice in all the dinner glasses, and one of …
