What's Tampa Bay Saying?

Gun Appreciation Day: Do You Support It?

Conservative groups are asking people across the nation – and right here in Tampa Bay – to show their support for the 2nd Amendment on Jan. 19. Will you support the movement?

As politicians line up to support stricter gun control measures in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre, conservative groups have joined forces to draw a line in the sand. The result: Gun Appreciation Day. Set for Jan. 19 – not coincidentally two days before President Barack Obama’s second inauguration – the observance is meant to be a national show of force in favor of gun owners’ rights. Support for the movement has come in from such sponsors as the Second Amendment Foundation, Special Operations Speaks, the Women Warriors PAC and others. The groups are asking people around the country, and right here in the Tampa Bay area, to “go to your local gun store, gun range or gun show with your Constitution, American flags and your ‘…

First Lady's Letter to Parents: 'Talking to Kids About Newtown'

'We can tell them that it’s our job now to stand with the people of Newtown.'

First Lady Michelle Obama has published "an open letter to parents following the tragedy in Newtown." The letter is printed below in its entirety. Dear parents, Like every American, Barack and I are absolutely heartbroken about the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, Connecticut.  And like so many of you, our first reactions were not as a President and First Lady, but as a Mom and Dad.  We were asking ourselves, what if this had been our town, or our school, or our girls?  And we know that all across the country, it’s not just adults who are asking questions right now – our children are looking for answers as well.  Like us, they want to know, why did this happen? Could it happen again?  And as parents, all of us can …

Gun Control: What's Bradenton Saying?

Should there be more controls on gun ownership? We asked Bradenton residents. Feel free to leave your comments below.

As people across the country talk about tightening gun control legislation in the aftermath of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., we asked local residents to share their thoughts: Here’s what a Bradenton Patch Facebook fan had to say: Does anyone see a connection between attempting to remove God and freedom from our lives with the incidence of nut cases rampaging with weapons? Instead of shouting about guns and the legality of such how about trying to find the reason the insane folks who perpetrate Newtown,CT type massacres are running free and are able to commit such deeds. Only one who is totally insane could kill children. SOMEONE had to realize this kid wasn't right in the head..... – David Reese What do …

Walmart, Dick’s Pull Assault Weapons: Is it Enough?

In light of the Newtown, Conn., shootings major retailers across the county are pulling certain assault weapons from their shelves. The National Rifle Association has even issued a statement that it’s ready to make “meaningful contributions.”

As the cry for tighter gun control laws sounds louder throughout America and right here in Tampa Bay, major retailers are reacting. Walmart has announced plans to stop selling the Bushmaster Patrolman's Carbine M4A3 Rifle through its online store. That particular assault rifle is in the same family of guns as the one Adam Lanza, the 20-year-old shooter in the Newtown massacre, reportedly used in the massacre, the Huffington Post reports.  Dick’s Sporting Goods, which has a number of Tampa Bay area locations, has also announced a shift in its stocking preferences. That store has suspended the sale of some semi-automatic weapons from all stores in the chain. In a statement, the store said it ordered the move out of respect for the victims …

You can argue gun control all you want to but it doesn’t solve the problem that caused the shooting in the first place. Society, schools and our sense of community has broken down. The people that wend off the deep end and committed these terrible atrocities where all mental ill and felt lost or shunned from their communities. You’re not going to end mental illness and you’re not going to stop …   more ›
