Weekly Tails From Southeastern Guide Dogs

'Paws For Patriots' Matches Vets, Guide Dogs

On this Independence Day weekend, we couldn’t think of a better time to spotlight Southeastern Guide Dogs' Paws for Patriots program and a couple remarkable graduates.

Paws for Patriots was started in 2006 and pairs visually impaired veterans with professionally trained guide dogs. Like all of Southeastern Guide Dogs' visually impaired students, the veterans spend 26 days on campus learning the intricacies of working with a guide. In the past five years, Paws for Patriots has matched more than 150 veterans with guide dogs. Here are two of those teams: Michael Jernigan & Brittani Jernigan, 32, is a United States Marine Corporal who was medically retired in December of 2005 after being blinded by a roadside bomb in Iraq. Cpl. Daniel T. Pelletier, U.S. Marines

Shining the spotlight on Bradenton-area troops.

Name: Cpl. Daniel T. Pelletier, U.S. Marines. Age: 22. His story: Pelletier, an air traffic controller with Marine Air Control Squadron 2 Detachment Alpha, has served in the Marine Corps for four years. He is currently aboard the USS Kearsarge with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit and is one of six members of the Mobile Marine Air Traffic Control Team, which has supported operations in Djibouti, Africa; Afghanistan; and most recently flood relief in Pano Aquil, Pakistan. Pelletier was previously deployed in Iraq's Al Anbar province at Camp Korean Village, Al Taqqadum and Al Asaad Air Base. Personally: Pelletier is a Bradenton native and attended Bayshore High, where he was a member of the JROTC. In his spare time, he enjoys water …
