Manatee County Schools Resume Tuesday

School board meeting has been rescheduled for Thursday evening.

Manatee County schools will return to their regular schedule on Tuesday after being closed today for Tropical Storm Isaac. School District officials will continue to work with Manatee County Emergency Management officials and encourage all students, parents and employees to monitor media reports. In addition, the Manatee County School Board will hold a special meeting on Thursday, August 30, 2012, beginning at 5:45 p.m. at the School Support Center to address the agenda originally scheduled for this evening.

Manatee County Closes Schools on Monday

Three county schools will serve as evacuation shelters.

All public schools in the Manatee County School District will be closed on Monday as Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to continue its path along Florida's Gulf Coast. All students and employees of the school district are advised to take precautions and stay home until the threat has passed. Monday's school closings in Manatee County include all before and after-school activities, athletic practices and games and a regularly scheduled meeting of the Manatee County School Board. Early Release Wednesday No More for Bradenton Students

While the early release schedule was popular among teachers and a majority of parnts surveyed, the school board did away with it Monday night.

For the past five years early release Wednesday — the day of the week school children get to go home early — has been fraught with contention. And now it seems, getting rid of the day that gives teachers extra preparation and training time and allows parents an afternoon for doctors' and dentists' appointments, won't meet with overwhelming enthusiasm. On Monday night the school board decided to end the program because it had not proved to help teachers improve student performance. While surveys showed that a majority of parents and teachers actually preferred an early release day once a week, the school board voted to end the practice. Actor Brings Star Power to Bradenton Golf Tournament

Armand Assante will participate in the Phil Galvano Golf Classic to raise money for Manatee County Schools.

Armand Assante has taken part in more than 100 movies and television shows, including American Gangster, The Marrying Man and The Mambo Kings. He's played a spy in the television series Chuck and has played John Gotti in a television movie. Now he's made the Manatee Education Foundation an offer they just can't refuse. The Emmy Award-winning actor will bring star power to the 16th annual Phil Galvano Golf Classic designed to raise money for Manatee County’s Public Schools through the Manatee Education Foundation. The Education Foundation is looking for sponsors for the event. Top sponsors will have the opportunity to meet Assante at an exclusive lunch. 5 Things You Need to Know Today: April 13

School is in session today, tickets are available now for one of the biggest and best parties in Manatee County and you can see a free musical performance Monday night.

1. School children will be disappointed to learn that a Manatee County calendar has a misprint about today. County calendars say school is out toay, but they are wrong. Today is a regular school day. In addition, Wednesday will not be an early release day. Wednesday's school hours are extended to allow more time for the FCAT test. Dismissal times for students on Wednesday April 18th will be 2:20 p.m. for high schools, 3:05 p.m. for elementary schools and 3:55 p.m. for middle schools. 2. Eleven high schools to compete in a District Drill Meet Saturday, Manatee's youngest wrestlers have organized a rummage sale and car wash to benefit one of their teammates and don't miss the DeSoto Seafood Fest this weekend.

1. Tonight is the kick off for the DeSoto Seafood Festival in downtown Bradenton. The three-day event kicks off at 5 p.m. and includes live music, beer and of course great seafood. Admission is free. 2. JROTC programs representing 11 high schools in Manatee and Sarasota Counties will hold their annual District Drill Meet Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Palmetto High School.
