The $36 million dollar expansion includes a major sports stadium for public sports competitions.
IMG Academy is growing in Manatee County. The academy for elite athletes worldwide is undergoing a 100-acre expansion that will include a new multi-sport complex with a stadium that will open in August 2013, according to The Bradenton Herald. The expansion shows that IMG is evolving into a venue for major competition as well as the training ground for professional and young, talented athletes. The stadium will feature: A new, lighted stadium field for baseball is also planned. The second phase will open in December 2013 and feature a 40,000-square-foot fieldhouse with multiple locker rooms, meeting spaces, and offices. Wide receiver Shane Dixon has transferred to IMG Academy. The 2013-14 foot season will be the first-ever prep season for IMG.
One of Palm Harbor University football's top wide outs is taking his receiving skills to IMG Academy in Bradenton, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Shane Dixon's departure to IMG was confirmed by PHU coach Matt LePain. Dixon, who has 21 receptions for 437 yards and three touchdowns, is the second PHU player who has transferred this offseason. In January, Connor Dorris left for Clearwater Central Catholic. Dixon will be taking part in the first-ever season of prep football for the IMG Academy. IMG Academy’s 2013 MLB Pre-Spring Training Program is in full swing with Pittsburgh Pirates Andrew McCutchen, Pedro Alvarez and Neil Walker.
At the end of 2012, Major and Minor League players began making their way to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., to get in some work before spring training. This year’s group is headlined by three of the biggest threats in the Pittsburgh Pirates lineup: Andrew McCutchen (OF), Pedro Alvarez (3B), and Neil Walker (2B). McCutchen returns to IMG Academy after participating in last year’s Pre-Spring Training program and is coming off a career year in 2012. 1. IMG Academies will host the third annual Beach Blast basketball tournament this weekend. The tournament, which is open to the public, features top high school basketball players. The tournament will include 32 teams from ten states. The three-day, 48-game tournament will showcase more than 50 nationally-ranked athletes, a handful of whom have already committed to top collegiate programs. The games will begin today at 9 a.m. and will continue until 6 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5. 2. Government offices will be closed on Monday for President's Day.
