82-year-old Pilot Dies in Ultralight Crash

The Federal Aviation Administration will not investigate the crash because the aircraft was a homemade experimental ultralight.

An 82-year-old man was killed Monday in when his homemade ultralight aircraft crashed off of Buckeye Road and Grass Farm Road in north Manatee County, according to a Manatee County Sheriff's report. James Richard Clendenon was already dead when deputies responded to the crash at about 4:35 p.m. Monday. According to the sheriff's report, Clendenon took off from Airport Manatee located on U.S. 41 in Palmetto.  The Federal Aviation Administration will not investigate the crash because the aircraft was a homemade experimental ultralight.

Troopers Continue Search for Car in Hit and Run

Troopers say a maroon Chevy Cruze with possible front-end damage was involved in the crash.

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to search for the driver of a Chevrolet Cruze involved in a hit and run crash that killed Erika Leigh Fortner, 42, of Venice. The FHP released a photo showing the kind of vehicle they are looking for in connection with the Oct. 30 crash at U.S. 41 and Montgomery Ave. Troopers believe a 2011 or 2012 Chevy Cruze was traveling northbound on U.S. 41 as Fortner was crossing U.S. 41 from east to west. The car struck Fortner and drove off. The investigation is ongoing. The Florida Highway Patrol is searching for a 2011-2012, Maroon Chevy Cruze with damage to the driver's front panel or driver's door area and missing the driver's outside rearview mirror. Port Manatee Worker Killed When Crane Basket Crushes Him

The 48-year-old man was loading bananas when a 5,500 pound basket fell on him.

A 48-year-old Tampa man working at Port Manatee unloading bananas from a ship was killed this morning, after a 5,500-pound basket for a crane fell on him, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office. Authorities are not releasing the worker's identity until his next of kin is notified. The sheriff's office has reported the accident to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. OSHA will investigate the accident, said Dave Bristow, a spokesman for the sheriff's office. The accident happened at about 9 a.m. at Berth 12. The worker, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was walking across a loading area on Del Monte Way, when he was pinned underneath the 5,500-pound crane basket, according to a report from the sheriff's office. …

Bicyclist Killed After Going Over Desoto Bridge in a Crash

The Bradenton man was riding his bike across the bridge before dawn, when a car struck him from behind.

A Bradenton man was killed Monday morning after the bike he was riding across the DeSoto Bridge was hit by a car and pushed over the retaining wall, according to a report from the Palmetto police department. Adon Newsome, 44, landed in the Manatee River, where he was found dead. The Palmetto Police Department is investigating the early morning crash. Newsome was traveling south across the bridge at about 4:40 a.m. Sunday when Gustavo Ramirez, Jr. 35, of Palmetto came up behind him. Ramirez was driving a 1997 Saturn, according to the police report. The car hit the bicycle and the impact caused Newsome and his bike to go over the retaining wall, off the bridge and into the Manatee River.  Ramirez Jr. stopped briefly at the scene to try to …

Woman Charged in Hit and Run Fatality

The Bradenton woman is facing nine charges, including leaving the scene of a crash involving a fatality and driving without a license.

The Bradenton Police Department Traffic Unit has arrested a woman on several charges involving a fatal crash on Manatee Avenue East a week before Christmas. Officers arrested Damaris Taina Reyes, 25, of Bradenton on felony charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving a death, leaving the scene of a crash with injuries and tampering with evidence. The crash happened on Dec. 18 at the intersection of 20th Street East and Manatee Avenue East at around 8:45 p.m. The crash involved two vehicles including a white 2000 Mazda MPV minivan and a dark blue 2007 Ford Focus. Bradenton Fire and Rescue responded to the scene along with several Manatee County EMS ambulances and supervisors. The crash victims were taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital …
