Tow truck drivers from around Florida paid their respects Sunday to a Largo driver.
Tow trucks and other heavy trucks are a familiar site in Largo with road construction happening all around town. But Sunday's procession of about 60 trucks was in memory of a Scott Edward Hinchliffe. The 46-year-old Madeira Beach man was driving his heavy-duty tow truck July 9 on Interstate 75 in Manatee County Hinchliffe's right front tire blew, and his truck hit an embankment. He died at the scene. The accident shut down the Interstate at the Erie Road overpass overnight. "What we do is incredibly dangerous. Most of the pubic sees us as they fly down the road," Ginger Darling, owner of Nationwide Towing. "Scott was a kind person. He cared a great deal about people. He would stop and tow someone, even if he would not get paid." Darling …

Sarasota remembered the life of developer Nathan Benderson at a memorial service for his hard work for family, community and business.
Friends and family remember developer Nathan Benderson for his gruff, frugal approach to business and life, but deeply rooted compassion for helping others. “He was the toughest and sweetest guy we will ever know,” Rabbi Brenner Glickman said. Benderson died April 7 at the age of 94 at Sarasota Memorial Hospital following a stroke. He was buried April 11 in Buffalo and family held a memorial service Wednesday at Temple Emanu-El in Sarasota. A crowd packed the pews at the temple and had to be seated in the overflow social hall. “So many people are here today,” marveled Shaun Benderson, Nathan Benderson’s grandson from Randy Benderson. “I know my grandfather’s hoping the temple’s charging for parking.” Benderson learned how to get by on very…

The musician continued writing songs and played with local groups after coming home from traveling the world.
Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt toured the world and lived a true rock and roll lifestyle but he was able to keep his roots in Bradenton, where he earned his first guitar string callouses in the red shed behind his Samoset home. After travelling the world with Iron Butterfly and later with Captain Beyond, Rinehardt spent his last years back home — literally — in the house where he grew up and started his first bands as a teenager. He died Monday at Manatee Memorial Hospital after years of poor health, that left him in pain, but never prevented him from writing music or playing the guitar. Soon after he returned to the area he began playing with Blue Swamp with old friend Richard Price and some new friends, including Mike Kach and Lynne Harrison …

Sarasota observes National Homeless Persons Memorial Day
Wednesday was the longest night of 2012, the winter solstice. All over the United States, communities gathered to mourn the homeless who died without an address. At Sarasota’s Salvation Army campus on 10th Street, a crowd gathered to pray and remember. “It’s balmy here tonight,” said Salvation Army Major Philip Murphy. “But it’s not so nice across the country." At this annual event, it was not balmy at all for the last two years. It was freezing. Even in the warm temperatures, the memorial was short – but with memorable moments. Father Jim Nilon’s invocation called, “For those who wander in isolation and loneliness, we pray.” Music was a part of the ceremony, which opened with a solo bagpiper from the Sarasota Military Academy, only two …

Tae kwon do instructor Ken Ellis, 61, who was shot and killed last Wednesday in North Port, is remembered by those who knew him as a fatherly figure.
PALMETTO — About 200 of his children showed up. Between wreaths of flowers and before bagpipes accompanied an "Amazing Grace" singing solo, the tae kwon do students spoke of their teacher and master Ken Ellis, a second father to some, a first father for others. Family to all who knew him. Ellis, the students said, never encouraged selfishness, aggressiveness or violence. Instead, similar to his smile that graced his portrait displayed before some 1,500 at the Manatee County Civic Center on Wednesday, he taught gentleness and control. They celebrated the life of Ellis, 61, a teacher at Manatee School for the Arts who was shot and killed last Wednesday at his North Port home. Detectives are still pursuing leads in the case but have made no …

I met Nate one day at his office when I was working on a project for them. In our friendly meeting, he put his hand out to shake mine and he still had his biking gloves on from his bike ride to work. Too funny. What I would like to thank him for though, is, my yellow lab puppy Buddy, that I adopted from Honor Animal Rescue a few months ago. He is such a loving addition to our family. :)   more ›
