A Duval County School Board member thinks kids should be able to fight back if they're attacked in school.
Harold Sultzbaugh June 18, 2014 at 10:55 am
Common sense should prevail in these cases. That is, OF COURSE the child(or adult) should fight back!Read More I know from experience that a strong reaction from the bullied(me) ended the problem, and afterward I was treated with respect. There is NO other reasonable solution to bullying. Harold Sultzbaugh

Just "turn the other cheek" NEVER works! Bullies know the rules (disobey them likeRead More "guidelines" as to just how far they can bully!) Victim HAS to be able to defend! Is this current rule enforced by "Pro-Life" people? If you really care for life, DEFEND IT and peoples right to defend themselves!

Difficult issue. As a child in an inner city school in Philadelphia, fighting in the school yardRead More was pretty commonplace. Typically a teacher would pull the kids apart and chase them to their next class. Sometimes a trip to the Principal's office and a scolding. Now such fights are often criminalized and the parents are brought into it and the whole business is blown out of proportion. I agree with the Superintendent, no fighting can be tolerated. Especially with easy access to weapons and the potential for dangerous repercussions. I would suggest investigating who triggered the altercation for appropriate discipline. There should be a clear policy to punish bullies.
Jose Baez has agreed to represent the family of an autistic boy who was slapped by a Pasco County school bus aide.

As a school Nurse assigned to a cluster school with high population of autistic and ESE children, IRead More do think monitors need to be in place. These children are very fragile people and while I will never excuse nor condone striking a child, I understand how it can happen. I think a thorough background check needs to be done during the employment process.

We have to make people aware that our State is run by public employee Unions and we need court casesRead More like today which ruled that the California Teacher Tenure rules are unconstitutional so that we can change laws and vote people out of office who do not represent the interests of the public who pay the taxes.

Something that is interesting to note is that high school grads are going to four year universitiesRead More and studying subject that isn't marketable. While on the other hand you have people getting vocational training at vocational schools that essentially guarantees them a job out of school that will make them 'x' amount of money. So it isn't that college degrees are worthless, some are. It is also said that sometimes trade school is the right choice! I have a simple fix for cyberbullying. Pass a law that simply states that in the case of a personRead More who self inflicts harm up to an including death which can be established to a correlation of the death or harm to comments made on ANY social media network of the victim shall be guilty of culpable neglence for injuries and manslaughter in the case of a death. in the case of an offender under the age of 18, the parent(s) shall be held responsible bottom line don't be the FIRST person or LAST to write a harmful message that results in a death

Mills has two very highly paid and very highly touted as competent assistants and no one knew theRead More law on public hearings? It's not looking good for our board. They hold the bag on this one. They selected Mills and they have been approving all his requests. Will their report show how many students are in district seats and how many are in charter? Will is show class sizes and numbers of students at the actual schools? Otherwise all we have to go on is their word. And this citizen isn't willing to trust their word when it is reported that they don't still honor public records requests.

I assume this is to accommodate all of the illegal aliens?
Suzanne S August 31, 2013 at 11:47 am
So do you want to pick the tomatoes and slaughter the hogs yourself? American businesses preying onRead More people in dire straights is what is bringing illegals here. How about addressing the problem from the top?

Yet when they go through the lunch line and have to take a fruit and vegetable, do you know where itRead More ends up? In the trash. They might "taste" it in the classroom but actually eating a whole one is another story.

canary September 2, 2013 at 10:21 am
Taxation without representation. The Superintendent makes the recommendation to the Board and theRead More Board never acts in the interest of the citizen. When contracts are negotiated who is the voice of the people paying the bill? No one it is all done on the behalf of the employee with no checks on the cost to the public. They are advocating to get changes to taxation so they have the ability to levy more taxes to just keep raising incomes. We have a bad deal.

So the MCSB is doing what the law requires. On the flip side- the students affected during thisRead More period will absorb these shortfalls during their tenure at these schools and some never at all. Seeing how classroom sizes are at Max capacity....standing room only in middle school classes. Yes I understand this is what needs to be done to fix MCSB's debacle, but you can't set the fire and then put it out and claim to be the hero.

I wonder how much of our tax dollars are squandered educating children of illegal immigrants.
Two more adminstrators have been put on adminsitrative leave in the district's internal Frazier investigation.

So true canary, but to think that these people with their mindsets were even able to reachRead More administrative positions is like turning off a computer program that keeps checks and balances....oh...wait..a..minute. How much of Gagnon's and Martin's mindset was used in the " restructured plan "?
Mark August 16, 2013 at 10:58 pm
No wonder our youth are so screwed up! Can't even trust a teacher anymore...who can you trust?Read More ...and the cycle continues. Time for changes in this town, on many levels.

As AD, Joe Kinnan should have known what was going down. He claims he had no idea. If true, heRead More should be fired for negligence!

The key phrase..." It also meets the MANDATE of the governor and the state legislature toRead More enhance teacher pay ". So it's a mandated settlement. Where would MCSB's position be if it weren't for the mandate??
