The department's main offices are housed in the S. Earl Crawley Building down the street from McKechnie Field and at the site of what was once Camp Weatherford, a World War II-era training facility. The department has about 200 employees scattered around several smaller locations throughout Bradenton, such as the Water Treatment Plant, Sign Shop and so on. It's back flow (BF) water testing time in Manatee County; a time I dread.
I am not ambivalent to paying for this yearly test to ensure that contamination does not occur but it is the entire process I loathe of finding, hiring and then dealing with local companies who provide this service.
Last year I called a particular back flow testing company, who promoted being the least expensive around. They did their job and I paid them for their service. Well, today I came home to find this same company performing the test because it was time do so. I told the tester I hadn't called for this service but he claimed that I signed to an ongoing service. I never agreed to anything! I took a look at their promo postcard which states that '...repeat customers will be automatically tested."
It didn't seem right...
I really feel that the Utilities Dept should actually act in the consumer's interest since they are the department requiring this test.
Some municipalities take quotes from back flow testing companies to get the best price for the job and then add one or two dollars to the resident's water bill for a few months to cover the cost. This could be optional.
The way the process works now in Manatee County, the resident must hunt and peck through a laundry list of certified back flow testers from the website and call each one for a price; ranging from $17 to $45. (I'll bet many residents won't even take the time.)
Could BF testing be done differently in Manatee?
