Cooler Weather Means More Manatees in Citrus County!

As the weather begins to grow colder all over the country, manatees are seeking refuge in the relatively warm, spring-fed waters found throughout Citrus County, with the largest concentration of manatees found in Crystal River and Homosassa. In fact, during the coldest times of the year, nearly 500 manatees can be found herding in the waters of Citrus County, making it North America’s largest manatee gathering place.

So grab your wetsuit and dive in because Citrus County is the only place in North America where nature lovers can legally swim and snorkel with these docile giants!

Manatees can grow as large as 3,000 pounds, but even at that size, you will marvel at their gentleness. Visitors can help preserve these gentle giants by not feeding them and by observing posted signs. There are numerous tour guide services that can make your manatee experience both safe and enjoyable, for both you and the manatees. So grab your snorkel and fins and take a dip with these magnificent creatures. It will be a moment you’ll never forget – that’s a promise.
