Manatee Teachers to Get Raises of $1,750

The settlements mark the first time in four years that the District and MEA have reached a collaborative agreement

Manatee school teachers whose salaries had been frozen will get a raise of at least $1,750, under a new proposed three-year contract, the district announced on Tuesday.

In addition, teachers' aides will get a $381 increase in salary.

The Manatee County School Board is expected to vote on approval of the contract at its next board meeting on Monday, Aug. 26, 2013.  Teachers also need to ratify their new contract.

A news release from the school district stated Tuesday that:

"Superintendent Rick Mills and MEA President Pat Barber are pleased to announce tentative settlements have been reached between the school district and the MEA that will result in teachers and paraprofessionals receiving raises for the 2013-2014 school year."

The settlements mark the first time in four years that the District and MEA have reached a collaborative agreement.

Last school year, there was no settlement reached, and the two school years prior to that, the Manatee District imposed contracts that had been rejected by a majority of MEA members.

"These settlements are about restoration for the financial sacrifices these valuable district team members have made over the last several years," Mills said. "It also meets the mandate of the governor and the state legislature to enhance teacher pay."
