Five Manatee Elementary Schools in for Longer School Days

The pupils at Manatee County Elementary Schools falling on the state's list of lowest performing schools in reading will be required to stay for a longer day this year, according to school officials.

The Florida Department of Education is requiring that students at Bullock, Daughtry, Oneco, Orange, Palmetto and Samoset stay an extra hour every day for a reading class. Students with a score of 5 or more in reading will be exempt from taking the extra class, according to an article in The Bradenton Herald.

Deputy Superintendent Diana Green told a Bradenton Herald News reporter that the hour will most likely be tagged on to the end of the day, meaning that the children will be at school until around 4 p.m.

The mandatory scheduling could cause a mass of other struggles such as bus scheduling conflicts, additional teacher compensation and transportation burdens for parents.
