Transportation Department To Seek Feedback on Cortez Bridge

The Florida Department of Transportation will be at the Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival this weekend to hand out surveys about planned bridge improvements.

If you're at the Cortez Fishing festival this weekend, you will get the opportunity to let the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)know just what you think about a proposal to improve the Cortez bridge.

The transportation department will hand out surveys this weekend that kick off a Project Development and Environment Study for the Cortez Bridge on State Road (SR) 684 in Manatee County.

FDOT is staffing a booth at the Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 16 and 17 and would like to hear people’s thoughts for future improvements to the bridge. The two-day festival will be celebrated in Cortez Village.

The engineering and environmental study will determine whether the bridge should be rehabilitated or replaced in the future. The survey includes several questions about the bridge and offers people a chance to share their ideas regarding proposed improvements.

FDOT asks people to return completed surveys and offer comments by March 1 to the department.

Here's some feedback that would improve the Cortez Bridge. How about giving the bridge operators laser sighting devices to better know when to open the bridge for an approaching boat? I live here on the island long-enough to know sometimes bridge operators open the bridge way too early for boats. This one tonight was more than five minutes out and cars had to sit and wait more than ten minutes.... I couldn't believe the bridge operator opened it soo early! I can understand operators getting bored to death at times - but my God small boats don't need the length of a runway to pass safely under a bridge. Put a camera system in the booths that gives operators a better idea as to when to open the bridge! You bridge authorities really need to give more consideration to automobile traffic! It's been insane trying to get on or off the island during the day. Night-time as well just isn't right...
