Teenager Fires Gun at Bus Stop Prompts Lockdown at Two Schools

The 15-year-old is charged with discharging a firearm near a school.

Two schools were put on lockdown this morning after a 15-year-old reportedly shot a gun into the air at a bus stop, according to a report from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Malik Dangelo Harris, 15, was charged with discharging a firearm within 1000 feet of a school.

At about 7:25 am deputies were dispatched to the bus stop at 3200 9th St E. after students reported hearing gunfire. Witnesses saw Harris fire several shots into the air from a hand gun while at the bus stop, according to the report. He then ran from the scene.

Two students and a bus monitor arrived at Horizons Academy and told the School Resource Officer that they witnessed Harris fire several shots in the air while at their bus stop. At no time did Harris fire shots at a school bus, students, or school. At no time did the suspect threaten any students with the handgun.

As a pre-caution Rowlett Elementary School and Southeast High school were placed on lock-down while deputies searched the area for Harris.

Around 9:35 am deputies found Harris at a residence at 934 38th Terrace East. He was arrested and taken to the Manatee Juvenile Booking Facility.

Detectives continue to investigate.
