Rescue 5 Engine from 9/11 on Display at Pasco County Fire Station 37

One of the original engines that answered the call to the World Trade Center towers during 9/11 is on display at Pasco County Fire Station 37 in Land O' Lakes.

All gave some, some gave all.

So goes the adage. Pasco County Fire Station 37 has the honor of hosting Rescue 5, one of the original rescue trucks than answered the call to the World Trade Center during 9/11. Rescue 4 and Rescue 5 engines were so badly damaged after the disaster that they were planed to be used for scrap. Rescue 4 and 5 were acquired by a group of firefighters and restored. They are now the only fire apparatus from 9/11 outside of New York City. They are currently on a national tour to promote 9/11 education and remembrance of firefighters.

There were 12 firefighters aboard Rescue 5 when it raced to the burning buildings during 9/11. Only one of them survived. The sole survivor, Bill Spade, penned an account of the events from that morning. Read it here.

"It's an honor to have Rescue 5 here," Captain Eric Marshall of Station 37 said.

The Pasco County Fire Department is trying to help raise money for the campaign by selling tee-shirts and stickers while the truck is on display at Station 37. Rescue 5 is only around until Friday before it heads off to another location. Check the website for more information on the tour stops and about the memorial itself, here.

Jimmy Whitfield and his son Jimmy Jr. were viewing the engine on Thursday afternoon.

"I'll always remember the day. We had a restaurant in Ocala with the news on all the time. People started coming in from all over, just glued to the TVs. Time kind of stopped in those hours. A lot of the people in the restaurant had friends or family members on some of the planes. It's something I will never forget." Whitfield Sr. said.

Whitfield's son Jimmy Jr. commented on Rescue 5 itself.

"This is the first thing I've ever seen in person regarding 9/11," Whitfield Jr. said. "It's huge. I try to imagine those guys responding to that call."
