Deputy Tasers Homeless Man, 20, During Bradenton Arrest

The Manatee County Sheriff's deputy had to use his stun gun when the man resisted arrest at the Lowe's in Bradenton, authorities said.

A deputy had to Taser a 20-year-old homeless man after he tried to resist arrest Tuesday afternoon in Bradenton, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

The deputy was attempting to arrest Covington Kaine Charles Raney on a warrant for violation of probation. The incident happened around 2:50 p.m. Tuesday at Lowe's Home Improvement, 4012 14th St. W.

According to the sheriff's office, Raney "tensed up and pulled away" from the deputy, who deployed his Taser, but only one probe struck Raney's shirt.

After a brief chase, the deputy caught up with Raney again, but when he tried handcuffing him, Raney continued to tense up braced his hands under himself, according to the sheriff's report.

The deputy then "drive stunned" Raney once on his lower back, the report states. Raney grabbed the deputy's stun gun, but the deputy was able to pull it away from him and apply the handcuffs.

Raney was arrested without further incident.

He is charged with violation of probation, resisting without violence and depriving an officer from protective equipment.
