The Bradenton Police Department is implementing a new effort to combat crime by providing officers as guest speakers at events occurring around the community free of charge.

“We are open to requests for events,” Deputy Chief of Police Warren Merriman said Thursday. “We want to provide this service in order to educate the public about what we do.”

The BPD’s new Public Speaking Bureau would provide a spokesman for any subject matter related to public safety. The requested or assigned speaker will deliver a 15– to 20-minute presentation on the requested subject matter and entertain questions at the conclusion of the presentation, Chief of Police Michael Radzilowski said in a press release.

Merriman said he hopes that schools and businesses around the community will utilize the tool to get to know more about law enforcement practices.

“It would be great if we could get organizations such as the Boys & Girls Club to participate,” Merriman said.

Groups wishing to utilize the service are asked to contact Shirley Edwards, Office of the Chief of Police, at either 941-932-9357, or by email at shirley.edwards@cityofbradenton.com.
