Bradenton Man Arrested In Fatal Drunk Driving Crash

A Bradenton driver is accused of fleeing the scene after crashing into a car and killing the driver.

A 55-year-old Sarasota man has died after a drunken driver from Bradenton struck his car on Washington Boulevard early this morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Siosaia K. Fonua, 29, of Bradenton was driving a 1995 Mercury on northbound U.S. 301 and struck a 1999 Ford Mustang driven by Scott R. Parker, 55, of Sarasota at 47th Street at about 12:50 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to te FHP report:

The Mercury struck the left side of the Mustang and Fonua ran away from the crash.  Law enforcement was able to find him soon after. Parker was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fonua, of 4324 55th Ave. Drive East, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. He faces DUI Manslaughter, driving on a suspended license and leaving the scene of a crash involving a death, according to Highway Patrol.

Fonua has a lengthy criminal record in Manatee County and received his first DUI at 18-years-old, according to court records.

In 2001 Fonua was charged with driving under the influence and was sentenced to community service and to probation, which was later violated, according to court records.

In 2006, Fonua pled no contest to felony robbery charges and received probation, which was violated in 2008. He received credits for time served in jail, according to court records.

In 2009, Fonua was charged and convicted for DUI and providing a false name to Manatee County Sheriff's deputies and driving on a suspended license for a third or subsequent offense. He refused to submit himself to a blood alcohol test during that arrest, according to court records.

Fonua's license was suspended again in October 2011 for not appearing in court, according to court records.

So sad. Scott was the ex-husband of my dear friend with whom he had a lovely daughter. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Parker family at this trying time.

I am sorry for the Parker family as well as the Fonua family. My sister is having his baby.

I am the former wife and mother of Scott's beautiful daughter. All of the immediate family are in shock and so very sad that we must say goodbye to our beloved. Hope is all I have that something beneficial to mankind will come because of this senseless accident. Driving while intoxicated is a selfish, unacceptable behavior that still slips through the cracks of the justice system, a subject that should be addressed to all driving age students. The effects touch so many others than just immediate family. I send prayers and blessings to everyone. DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE, EVER.

I am so sorry for te loss of a father, brother, son, and friend to so many. This is so unfair and it makes me so angry to think about how many innocent lives are lost to drunk driving. It's beyond selfish and aweful to get behind the wheels of a car after drinking. My prayers are with the victim's family. I'm so sorry.

Scott was my cousin, a talented loving man. My heart breaks for his parents, daughter, brother, sister, Jan, all who knew and loved Scott. The selfish act of one man have changed forever the lives of many. Love and prayers to you all.
