Support Group for Children of Addicted Parents

Because of the success of the Children
of Addicted Parents Education (CAPE) Program, Manatee Glens is encouraging more
youth to participate. CAPE is an evidence-based curriculum that helps the young
people begin to identify feelings, develop coping skills, learn about
addiction, build safety plans for their home lives and ultimately enjoy a
healthy recovery.

The group is open to those in middle and
high school and meets every Monday from 5 to 6 p.m. at Manatee Glens West, 371
6th Avenue West, Bradenton, 34205. This is a six-week rotating
group, and youth may join any Monday. There is no charge to participate.

Young people benefit from knowing they
are not alone. “Also, when the children see their parents abusing drugs or
alcohol in front of them, it makes them think that’s ok and a good way to cope
with your problems.  CAPE shows them that
drugs and alcohol are not the answer to dealing with difficulties,” explained Sharon Sauls.
“I think it’s an awesome program. A lot of kids are reluctant to go to therapy,
but once you get them in the door, they don’t want to stop.
