The
next Freethinkers’ Briefing will
feature Bishop Bridget Mary Meehan who will share an overview of
the international women priests’ movement, her journey from obedient nun to
leader in a movement that is living Gospel equality in inclusive, grassroots
communities in the United States, South America and Canada. Bishop Meehan was
born in County Laois, Ireland. Her parents, Jack and Bridie and brothers,
Patrick and Sean immigrated to the United States when Bridget Mary was 8 years
old. They lived in Arlington, Virginia. She entered the Immaculate Heart of
Mary Order at 18 and left ten years later. Later, she joined the Sisters for
Christian Community, (SCC) an independent religious order whose focus is on
nurturing spiritual unity and community among all religions. Bishop Meehan
acquired the following academic degrees: BA from Immaculate College in
Pennsylvania, MA from Catholic University in Washington, DC and a Doctor of
Ministry from the Episcopal Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia.



Bishop
Meehan worked for fifteen years in pastoral ministry at Ft. Myer Chapel in
Arlington, VA. She has written 20 books including The Healing Power of Prayer, Praying
with Women of the Bible, Praying with Celtic Holy Women, A Promise of Presence,
Praying with a Passionate Heart, Delighting in the Feminine Divine and Living
Gospel Equality Now. She was a television producer whose Godtalk programs
have aired on Fairfax Cable, a local access television station in northern
Virginia. On July 31, 2006, Meehan was one of twelve women who were ordained
Roman Catholic Woman Priests by the Roman Catholic Women Priests’ Movement.  On April 19, 2009 she was ordained a bishop.
She serves the Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests - www.arcwp.org, email address is sofiabmm@aol.com. She serves as a co-pastor of Mary Mother of
Jesus Inclusive Catholic Community who meets at St. Andrew UCC at 6908 Beneva
Rd. Sarasota, FL on Saturdays at 4 pm for a Catholic liturgy that welcomes all
