"Communication that Heals" is the topic of the next Freethinkers
Briefing at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota that will feature
Barry Bub, MD, former family physician who specializes in medical communication
and counseling skills.  In this presentation,
he describes an encounter at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery with a
prize-winning painting of a little boy followed by his remarkable journey into
its sequel. Along the way, the audience learns about healthcare,
communications, healing and society’s attitude towards perfection. The audience
is invited to explore the meaning of this painting. As they listen to the
artist’s message they learn about the nature and expression of suffering and
how it relates to serious disabilities. The result is a deeper insight into how
to listen and respond to suffering in ways that are affirming, healing and
transformative.  This presentation promises to create a powerful
experience - one in which participants will be stimulated to think about their
perspectives on individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities.

Dr.
Bub, a native of South Africa, has had an extraordinary and eclectic career as
a family physician, gestalt psychotherapist, volunteer chaplain, writer and
educator. Author of numerous journal articles and a ground-breaking book,
“Communication Skills that Heal,” he now writes, lectures and leads creative,
interactive workshops for adults on topics dealing with communication,
relationship, self-care and healing. He is also the innovator of the
Confidential Litigation Stress Mentoring program designed to assist physicians
distressed and traumatized by medical mistakes or litigation to integrate their
experience and transform it into empowerment and growth. He is on the adjunct
staff at Temple University Medical School, Philadelphia. His latest passion is
art and photography which he uses extensively in his teachings.
