What Should Go Here: Checkers/Owens Property

The Bradenton property that was once home to a Checkers Drive In and the Manatee School District's human resources department is up for sale. What would you like to see move in?

A property on the southwest corner of Manatee Avenue and First Street West in Bradenton will sit a little while longer after a real estate deal fell through, the Manatee County School District said Tuesday.

The district had been close to selling the 65,210-square-foot piece of commercial land known as the Checkers/Owens property — so named because it was once home to a Checkers Drive In and the Bill Owens Annex, which housed the district's Human Resources Department.

But the $1.65 million sale to Blackrock Development LLC was terminated earlier this month, the school district said. It's putting out a request for proposal and seeking offers.
