Kids wanting to get a taste of the opera can do so through the Sarasota Youth Opera's open enrollment for its Winter/Spring semester.
Singers from 8 to 18 years of age are welcome to attend one of two upcoming enrollment nights: Wednesday, Jan. 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday, Jan. 11, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Sarasota Opera House. Rehearsals for the Winter/Spring season will begin on Jan. 14 and run through mid May.
In addition, dates are set for the 2013 Sarasota Youth Opera Camp, which will again be held at the Sarasota Opera House from June 10 to 28. Details on registration for this year’s summer camp can be found on the Sarasota Opera website, www.sarasotaopera.org.
During the 2013 Winter/Spring semester, the Sarasota Youth Opera will perform outreach concerts throughout the community culminating in their annual Spring Celebration Concert on May 4. In addition, members will be eligible to audition in early May for soloist roles in SYO’s November 2013 Youth Opera production.
A new addition to program will be the formation of the Sarasota Youth Opera Chamber Chorus, a small, specialized choral ensemble made up of Sarasota Youth Opera members. Auditions for this select group of singers will be held at a later date and will be open to all members of the Sarasota Youth Opera Program.
Singers do not have to prepare a song for the initial enrollment exercise. The enrollment helps to determine placement between the Youth Opera Full Chorus and the Preparatory Chorus. There will also be a parents meeting to go over specifics of the program, payment schedules and other information.
Sarasota Youth Opera accepts all levels of talent and provides vocal and acting training. Tuition is $150 per session and scholarships are available based on financial need. Tuition can be paid via check, credit card or the administration can work with you to create a payment plan.
To sign up for either of the enrollment nights, call Ben Plocher, Youth Opera Coordinator, at(941) 366-8450, ext. 249 or by email at email@example.com.
