'Glengarry Glen Ross' Opens At Asolo

1. Greed and capitalism takes the stage at Asolo Rep this weekend with Glengarry Glen Ross. The show opens Friday at 8 p.m. and is directed by Carl Forsman, dean of the University of North Carolina School for the Arts. The show runs through Feb. 28. 

The play contains strong language and 30 minutes before each performance, Asolo staff members will host a talk on the mezzanine about the language the playwright employs and aims to put the language in perspective for audiences.

The next show after Friday's opener is a 2 p.m. matinee on Jan. 20. Tickets range from $20 to $72. For more, call 941-351-8000 or visit www.asolorep.org.

2. Selby Gardens' newest exhibit Florida Fantastica opens today from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The exhibit features mixmedia from Philadelphia native artist MF Cardamone.

Cardamone beautifully records the life stories of plants using actual Florida native botanical specimens incorporated with images and words. 

Exhibit is included with admission to the gardens, 811 S. Palm Ave. Tickets to the gardens are $17 for adults, $6 for children and free for children 5 and under.

3. The Artists' Guild of Anna Maria Island, Restless Natives, Libby's Jewelry & Gifts, Beach Life AMI, and Island Tattoo will host public receptions from 5:30 p.m. to -7:30 p.m. as part of the monthly Holmes Beach ARTWALK. Enjoy fine art, free refreshments and the opportunity to meet some of the local artists that make up the vibrant Arts Community of Holmes Beach.

4. Art Center Manatee is hosting ArtBlast, a fun-filled day of art! ArtBlast offers an opportunity to try different mediums through 2-hour workshops scheduled throughout the day. Also enjoy an Acrylic Paint Around in the morning  and a Watercolor Paint Around in the afternoon. Keeton’s Art Supply will be in house with great offers for the artist in you. The Acrylic Paint Around begins at 11 a.m. and the Watercolor Paint Around begins at 2 p.m. Cost is $25 per Workshop

5. The Tampa Bay Lightning are getting back to work after the owner's lockout ended. The team will open up training camp Sunday at the Tampa Bay Times Forum with a free fan fest, too, with free lunch on the plaza.

The doors will open at 9 a.m.  Fans should park in either the Forum East or Forum West Lot and enter through the main entrance.  Lightning players will sign autographs for fans from 10-11 a.m.  They will then head back to the locker room and get ready as Guy Boucher will lead the first practice of the season from 12:30-2 p.m. Fans can buy single-game tickets there and buy game-used equipment as well. Lightning merchandise will also be marked 50 percent off.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that training camp will head to Estero at Germain Arena on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. All training camp practices are free and open to the public. The season is expected to start Jan. 19 and an official schedule is due out Saturday.
