Manatee Glens Hospital & Addiction Center Begins First-Of-Its-Kind Residency Program in State of Florida

The American Osteopathic Association has approved the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine/Manatee Glens Hospital Psychiatry Residency program, the first private, non-profit psychiatric hospital to have its own medical residency program. It is one of only seven such Osteopathic programs in the country. The first three residents will begin in the summer of 2014 and will stay for four years. Manatee Glens will add residents each year until there are 12 total.

“Florida is in dire need of more psychiatrists. We know that physicians are likely to stay in the community where they train,” stated Manatee Glens President/CEO Mary Ruiz. “These physicians will also alleviate some of the current demand for more mental health and addictions help and enable Manatee Glens to serve more people.”

“The addition of the new psychiatric medicine program at Manatee Glens will enhance the current primary care residency programs which are now in existence at Manatee Memorial Hospital,” said Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Robert George, D.O.

Manatee Glens Chief Operating Officer, Deborah Kostroun added, “There was no template for this program. Our team created it from beginning to end. It will now serve as a model for other non-profit psychiatric hospitals and will enhance training and education opportunities.”

The residents will receive training in inpatient, outpatient, addictions, severe and persistent mental health disorders, including schizophrenia and bi-polar disorders. They will have the opportunity to experience all aspects of mental health care for adults, teens and children.

Manatee Glens currently trains post-doctoral graduates, interns and those in rotations in nursing, social work, pharmacy, occupational therapy, case management and physician assistants. Students come from throughout the nation and overseas to study here. Founded in 1955, Manatee Glens is today one of the foremost nonprofit mental health and addiction training centers in the country, leading the field in the implementation of co-occurring mental health and addiction treatment and trauma-informed care.
