Clyde Butcher Will Welcome the Public to Large Exhibit at Anna Maria Island Studio

Butcher will unveil never before seen photo of Governor Chiles’ North Florida cabin

Internationally renowned landscape photographer and environmentalist Clyde Butcher will have 57 pieces of his classic Florida photographs on display at The Studio at Gulf and Pine on Anna Maria Island, Florida this month and next. Additionally, Butcher will attend a meet and greet for the public at the opening reception on February 6, 2014 from 6pm – 9pm.

Governor Chiles’ wife Rhea Chiles, who owns the studio, invited Butcher to attend this special event. At the exhibit, Butcher will unveil a signature piece he was asked to take back in 1988 when the Governor was in office, never before seen by the public.

Governor Chiles is one of the few politicians who I have admired in my life because of all he did for Florida,” said Clyde Butcher. “When I was honored with the most prestigious cultural honor that can be bestowed upon an individual in the state of Florida – The Artist Hall of Fame Award, Governor Chiles was at the event celebrating with me.  He then invited me to come out to photograph his cabin.  I was sure his cabin was a very large and modern house and that he misunderstood what kind of photography I do, but I said yes.”

The cabin, located in North Florida, has a unique history. When Interstate 10 was being built, the two-story cabin built in the 1800’s, was slated for demolition. Governor Chiles (who wasn’t Governor at the time) had the cabin carefully removed piece by piece and then rebuilt on his property. The rebuilding was done using the same tools and equipment of that time period. “It was beautifully completed and yes, it was worthy of a photograph!” said Butcher.

While all 57 photos will be on display beginning January 30, 2014, Butcher will make a public appearance at the opening reception on February 6, 2014. Butcher’s Classic Images collection will be on display at The Studio at Gulf and Pine from January 30 – February 26, 2014.

A large selection of Clyde's photography can also be viewed at his Venice Gallery & Studio in Venice, Florida, and at his Big Cypress Gallery, which is located on 13 acres in the center of the Everglades, midway between Naples and Miami on Tamiami Trail (Hwy. 41), in the Big Cypress National Preserve. The gallery is surrounded by more than a million acres of national park wetlands and wild Florida cypress strands. For more information go to www.clydebutcher.com/events.cfm

About Rhea Chiles’ The Studio at Gulf and Pine:

Rhea Chiles’ The Studio at Gulf and Pine serves as a venue for meetings, lectures and parties, with the work of local artists showcased on a constantly changing schedule.  It is offered as a meeting place for University of South Florida lectures and discussion groups, as a state-of-the art boardroom and media center for local Boards of Directors, as well as an elegant setting for weddings and corporate parties and artist workshops. Chiles’ vision for The Studio at Gulf and Pine was to have it serve as a forum, space, or gallery – an open hall for the intersection of minds.  The former first lady of Florida is an artist herself, working with oils, pastels, and watercolors. The Studio sprang from her love of art and learning and has become known as a multi-cultural destination, and an integral part of the artist community of Anna Maria.
