Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School Hosts Weeklong Arts Festival

The Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School “Fine Arts Week”, runs March 10 - March 16, and will feature student art exhibits, musicals, a national speaker and an a cappella choir from Yale to highlight the arts curriculum at the school.

“While we appreciate and focus on STEM curriculum heavily here at Saint Stephen’s, we know that the arts are a necessary addition to problem-solving, and can enhance the STEM curriculum, which is why nationally the acronym has changed to STEaM. Even if you are building a robot or a hovercraft, you need to infuse color and design into the creation,” said Dr. Janet Pullen, Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School’s Head of School. “Fine Arts Week is an integral week in combining these two philosophies and encouraging our students to explore both,” she said.

The Schedule of Events for Fine Arts Week is as follows:

During the “Art Show Triple Play”, students fill the school with three showcases. The 2014 Spring Art Show, housed in the library on the second floor of the Holmes Building featuring art from lower, intermediate and middle school students. This exhibit will be open for viewing every day until March 21, 2014.

The 16th Annual Alexi Tucker Memorial Juried Art Show on the first floor of the Russell building features works of art from the upper school students. Alexi Tucker, a Saint Stephen’s senior from the class of 1997 and a promising artist, passed away her senior year and the memorial art show was founded in memory of her talent and legacy. The art will be on display until April 9, 2014, and winners of all awards will be announced at the reception on March 10 at 5pm.

This year, the School is introducing the inaugural STEaM Showcase. The STEaM showcase features student projects that encompass at least two of the disciplines found in the STEaM acronym: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, and the focus of the showcase is on how those aspects are integrated into the School’s Curriculum.
