Sugarcane Harvest

16405 Myakka Rd, Sarasota, FL | Get Directions »
$2.00

The December 8th festival is, as the title suggests, a sugar cane harvest. That means local sugar cane producers will be there selling this year's cane syrup. They will be grinding cane on the sugar mill with a mule, boiling the syrup, and serving pancakes and wild hog sausage sandwiches and swamp cabbage. How's that for a starter?
Then, in the museum we will have taffy pulling and fudge making and the history of sugar demonstrated. Outside, crafters will do hands-on demonstrations of varies crafts of the period that were essential for every day functions. This means the guests will get to try the various crafts being demonstrated, such as blacksmithing, basket weaving etc.
Big Red's Smokin Chicken and Pork out of Myakka City will make wild hog BBQ with all the fixin's. The boy scouts will be grilling hot dogs and hamburgers. The Sarasota Military Academy cadets will be parking cars for a $2.00 donation and the quest receives a complimentary raffle ticket. The music is going to be wonderful because it is organized by local celebrity Carolyn Dunn and will be performed on the steps of the historic Tatum House.
These activities are from 11 am to 5 pm. From 5 pm to 7 pm there will be storytelling around the fire. First, by professionals and then "karaoke" storytelling by guests.
