I'm an English educator and administrator for 25 years (Grades Six through doctoral seminars and I did some research on Ms. Givens and her experience in theater and reviews of her dramatic performances.and was pleasantly surprised at what I unearthed. As my Director of Graduate Study at the NYU Department of English used to say, "If you survive this program, you will be one of the best researchers around." I am especial;ly proud because my much-beloeved (and multi-talented as well as beautiful) niece has one of the principal roles in the play. The Manatee Players are among the best regional theater in the country. I don't think the entire crop (BA., Ma, PhD) of graduating students at NYU in my year could have [persuaded Edward Allbee to give a commencement address, let alone a prize on a regular basis. Kids need the arts. I know many of my fellow educators will say that I, of all people, should be aware that our kids learn to improve their reading and writing skills before spending time on "frills" — but theater fosters growth in literacy (and "the best researcher around" has done his research; it's all there, valid and reliable), in community building, in facilitating social relationships among kids and adult whom otherwise never would meet. I don't think I have to apologize that my Major Fields of Study are Modern Drama and Contemporary Drama; Yes, I touch the future; I teach — and I'm proud of the work I do — but people like Robin Givens teach as well.

EVEN PhDs MAKE MISTAKES - DISREGARD THE FIRST COMMENT: I'm an English educator and administrator for 25 years (Grades Six through doctoral seminars) and I did some research on Ms. Givens and her experience in theater and reviews of her dramatic performances.and was pleasantly surprised at what I unearthed. I don't think I have to apologize that my Major Fields of Study are Modern Drama and Contemporary Drama; Yes, I touch the future; I teach — and I'm proud of the work I do and its outcomes — but people like Robin Givens teach as well and from what I've been reading, she has much to offer us, especially our children. Not all effective teaching is done in classrooms.
