The City Councilwoman will resign her council seat to take on Mayor Wayne Poston.
Bradenton City Councilwoman Marianne Barnebey will give up her City Council seat to enter the mayor’s race for this November’s election. Barnebey, who has served on the City Council since 1998, said she wants to work to help the community prosper and to improve the quality of life in Bradenton. “After receiving encouragement from many citizens and business owners in our community, I have decided to run for mayor," she said Wednesday. "We have serious issues we must face to maintain and improve our quality of life for all. I will remain committed to the citizens as we continue to move forward together and look forward to hearing from all the citizens of Bradenton.” She plans to do that through continuing the city's redevelopment efforts …

President Barack Obama's campaign, Obama For America, has set up shop at 305 Gillespie Ave. in Sarasota.
Supporters for President Barack Obama couldn't even make it through the door at a packed opening house Saturday in Sarasota. "The Obama Knights are coming," said Karen Andre, deputy political director of Florida for the Obama campaign, in front of a standing room only crowd at the headquarters. Obama For America opened up nine phone banks and campaign offices, including a regional headquarters at 305 Gillespie Ave., in Sarasota., beside the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce offices. "It's all about momentum," said Rita Ferrandino, chairwoman of Sarasota County Democratic Party. "It's about the fact that people want to see the president elected and they're taking time out of their beautiful Saturday afternoon." For Ferrandino, the rally …

Mitt Romney earned a convincing victory over Newt Gingrich and other Republican nominees in Florida's Presidential Preference Primary.
Mitt Romney won the Florida Presidential Preference Primary on Tuesday, earning the state's 50 delegates and distancing himself from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich as the Republican front-runner for 2012. The Associated Press projected Romney's commanding victory shortly after 8 p.m., when the final polls closed in Florida's Panhandle. The former Massachusetts governor had taken 46 percent of the vote to 31 percent for Gingrich after returns from 99 percent of the polls were in. Rick Santorum had 13 percent, and Ron Paul 7 percent. "Florida, you're the best," a victorious Romney told a crowd gathered at his primary night celebration at the downtown Tampa Convention Center. In Manatee County, Romney took 48 percent of the vote, …

With 119 of 124 precincts counted, Romney is the decisive winner.
Newt Gingrich came to Manatee County last week to fire up his supporters. Nearly 5,000 people came out to hear what the Republican candidate had to say. By Tuesday they had made up their minds. Gingrich fell short of winning the support he needed in Manatee County to help him take the state. Manatee County voters were more aligned with state voters than perhaps anyone suspected. With 23 percent of the state counted Romney took 49 percent of the vote and Gingrich had just 30 percent. In Manatee County with 119 of 124 precincts counted Romney took 48 percent of the Manatee county votes. Gingrich trailed with just 27 percent of the votes. Rick Santorum took third place with just over 16 percent of the vote in Manatee County. The unofficial …
Mitt Romney is ahead of Newt by a nearly 2-to-1 margin in early and absentee voting.
Early Manatee County voters overwhelmingly voted for Mitt Romney as the Republican nominee for president. In early and absentee voting, Romney took 47 percent of the vote, while his toughest opponent Newt Gingrich took just 27 percent. Rick Santorum is in third place with just 16 percent of votes counted so far. Ron Paul is in a distant third with just over 6.5 percent of the votes. Early results show Romney took more than 15,000 votes, while Gingrich netted just over 8,700 with 94 of 124 precincts reporting.
The final two polls on the Florida presidential primary are in.
One voter delayed casting his vote until Tuesday afternoon because he wasn't casting his ballot for either of the front runners.
As of noon today Manatee County's voter turnout was nearing 30 percent of registered republicans, thanks in large part to absentee and early voting. The Supervisor of elections mailed out nearly 12,000 absentee ballots and Nancy Bignell, assistant supervisor of elections, said many of those ballots have been returned. "I think the thing that helped us is the absentee ballots," she said. "People are still walking them in." This morning the elections office picked up four ballots that had been overnighted. Voters have until 7 p.m. tonight to bring their absentee ballots to the elections office. Some early and absentee voters who didn't wait until the last minute may wish they had procrastinated. The ballot was printed when nine candidates …
The Newt Gingrich campaign has a robocall out in Florida claiming that Mitt Romney once took kosher food away from Holocaust survivors.
There are no lines, but a steady stream of voters are coming to the polls.
Stan Swartz had his OMG moment of the morning as he was leaving his polling place in northwest Bradenton. "Obama Must Go," he said. His vote, he said, was a vote for a candidate who could replace President Barack Obama. Swartz, who watched every Republican debate from beginning to end and who attended Tuesday Manatee Tea Party meetings to learn even more about the candidates, voted for Newt Gingrich on Tuesday. He doesn't believe that Manatee County will necessarily fall in line with the rest of the state on who gets elected here. But, he said, "most of the Republican candidates are very well qualified, and all of them are more qualified than Obama." His wife, Sue Swartz, said she didn't sit through the debates from beginning to end like …
