About this column:

Bradenton Patch honors standouts on the local sports scene.
Growing up, what other sports did you play besides baseball?: I was a basketball guy, too, growing up. I played a couple of years of football, but I never really got into football that much. When did you decide to focus solely on baseball?: Probably my seventh-grade year. I had battled knee problems from growing up so fast. My mom (Debra Brooks) and I made a big decision to keep my focus on baseball because I knew I was pretty good at it growing up. I knew that if I worked at it, I knew I could continue to be good at it. What has this season been like for you and your teammates?: Oh, it has …
When did you make the decision to come to Bradenton and the IMG Soccer Academy?: Last year when I was with FC Dallas, I was at a showcase and IMG scouted me. I was pretty good friends with (IMG Soccer Academy Boys U15 coach) Oscar (Pisano). He scouted me and told me that he would like for me to come to IMG, so I did. So, you’re glad you made the decision to come to IMG?: I’ve been really happy with the decision to come here. The facilities are unbelievable. You can’t get any better. Everything, including the weather, is amazing. What are the differences between Bradenton and where you’re from…
What sports do you play besides softball?: I played volleyball my freshman year. Then, I played golf for the rest of three years (of high school). Which sport do you like the best?: It’s between softball and golf because I have a really great passion for both. Mostly softball because I’ve been playing since I was like 7 or 8. What’s the excitement level like at school with your team winning a region championship and advancing to the Final Four?: The excitement is getting higher because we’ve made it so much farther and we are making history. It feels good to have people around school saying…
How does it feel to win a district championship?: Nothing compares. It feels great. It hadn't happened in (his) four years, but it felt like it was going to happen (on Thursday night against Cardinal Mooney). Everything went right for us. Is this your greatest baseball memory?: Yes, it is. What was the former No. 1 (baseball memory)?: I would have to say playing with great kids in other tournaments. (Players) that I never thought I would be good enough to play with. How long have you played baseball?: Ever since I could walk. What other sports did you play growing up?: Football and basketball…
Besides softball, what other sports do you play?: I play basketball. I'm the point guard (for the Bradenton Christian team). How old were you when you started playing each sport?: Oh gosh, I was 4 or 5. I don't know. I grew up with (softball and basketball). My mom (Julie) pitched in college, and she also played basketball. My dad (Keith) is really competitive and he played basketball, too. (Basketball) is something that is part of the family. My brother (Justin) and sister (Heather) played (basketball at BCS). It's just normal for us. Would you like to play one or both sports at the college …
Where are you from originally?: Ecuador. How long have you been in the United States?: It will be five years on April 15. Did you know any English before coming to the United States?: No. How long did it take you to become completely fluent?: About three years. When did you start playing tennis?: I've been playing tennis since I was 4. Who or what lead you into tennis?: My dad. He is a coach at IMG (Academies). Did your dad (Aurielo) play professionally?: No, but he was the No. 1 junior from Ecuador when he was 16. He is the best coach to come out of Ecuador. How has tennis helped you in your…
What was it like playing in Bradenton last year?: It was an overall great experience. With it being their first year, they did a good job of accomplishing everything that goes along with establishing a team in a new city. It was fun playing in the first season here. What were some of the things you did in your downtime last season?: You don't have a whole lot of downtime. You wake up, grab a quick lunch and go to the field. I ate a lot of Chipotle. Being at the field all day, you eat dinner there and then you go home. There's not a whole lot of free time, but people would go to the beach when…
What sports did you play growing up?: I started out at a very young age playing soccer. In middle school and high school, I ran track. My last years in high school were just track and cross country. There were only so many spots on the varsity (soccer) team. I stopped playing JV (soccer) in 10th grade, so I went on to varsity running. I’ve continued to run 5Ks on my own. When I went (to USF’s Tampa campus), I discovered sports clubs and the surf club. But that didn’t do much to keep me in shape. I joined the crew team at the club level in Tampa. I did that for about three months, but the team…
How many years have you played softball?: Since I was about 6. My older sister (Sara) actually played, and I would always be out there watching her and my dad (Kurt) coaching her. Actually, I started playing because they needed an extra player. They threw a jersey on me and threw me out in the outfield. That's how I started playing. Do you have a favorite softball memory?: I was going through a really bad hitting slump last year. The coaches and I worked on a ton of different drills — both fundamental and swing-wise. Then, we played Central Florida Community College (in a doubleheader) and I …
What is your best baseball moment?: Our summer team, (American Legion Kirby Stewart) Post 24, when we won the state championship (in 2009). That was awesome. Being at the bottom of a dog pile is kind of nice. What is the worst feeling you’ve ever had on the diamond?: When we lost (3-2 to Tampa King) in the (Class 5A) regional quarterfinals last year. I wanted it so badly, and we worked our butts off. It was just sad to end it like that. What are your goals for the 2011 season?: As a team, we definitely want to win 20 games and a district championship. Individually, I’m just looking to repeat …
How were you introduced to tennis?: When I was 7 or so, I had asthma and needed physical activity. My dad suggested that I play tennis. Was tennis a difficult sport for a child with asthma?: Well, I had to do something. When I started playing tennis and doing physical activities, I got better. How tall are you?: 6-foot-5. How does your height help your game?: I serve harder and I can hit harder. When I come to the net, I have a longer wingspan. I can cover more court. You were born in China. When did you come to the United States?: I'm pretty sure it was 2006. Did you speak English before you…
"I have over 30 years of experience in the game. I played with two first-team All-Americans in high school and was on two state championship teams, but I've never seen a player put his team on his back the way that Chris has done this season." -- Saint Stephen's assistant coach Bernard Yanelli on Chris Scott. How long have you played soccer?: I've played soccer my whole life. I started the earliest that you can actually start playing. I've also been a forward the entire time. Do you play any other sports?: Actually, I played football this year because the team needed a few people. I played …
What other sports have you played?: I started running track in elementary school, but basketball came first. I had to give (track) up. How have you been able to bounce back from three knee injuries since eighth grade?: Dedication and hard work pay off. A lot of people told me to just give basketball up and pursue other things, but basketball is what makes me happy. What is it like playing basketball for Southeast?: It's a great feeling to be part of this legacy and to play for a Hall of Fame coach like Coach (John) Harder. That's why we have to win the district (tournament) because I refuse …
How did you become involved in the sport of wrestling: My grandfather (Bob Fulk) was the head coach of Glenbard North High School in Illinois. He had a really successful program and is a Hall of Fame coach. My dad and uncle wrestled for him. When my family moved to Georgia, that’s when I started wrestling with my older brother, Andrew. I’ve just wrestled ever since. What is the best part of wrestling: Proving that I do belong on an outstanding team. You sometimes have days where you don’t want be there and you would rather be doing 100 other things, but you go out on the mat and you get your …
