Manatee Players Win Hearts With 'Seven Brides for Seven Brothers'

The production runs through May 20 in Manatee Riverfront Theatre.

Young ladies everywhere can learn a lesson from Milly's tale: While it's an effective strategy to win a man's heart by going through his stomach, in reality, you may get more than you bargained for.  Milly learned the hard way by beguiling Adam with her tasty dishes in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," directed and choreographed by the Manatee Players' Rick Kerby. Little did Milly know, once Adam wooed her into marriage, she'd be keeping house for not just him, but his six brothers, as well. Adam, played by the strapping William E. Masuck, sings his way into Milly's heart with such a rich tone that any single lass is sure to swoon at his feet. Matching Masuck's machismo with sassy grit is Wendy James, who makes her return to the Manatee …

Garden Maze Attracts Visitors to Village of the Arts

South Village Gallery recently opened a new walking garden maze to help promote the Village

The mother of invention inspired Todd Fisher to undertake a project designed to bring people to the Village of the Art and keep them there. Fisher moved to Florida from Ohio in 1989 and quickly fell in love with the area. He lived in Sarasota for years while buying property in the Village of the Arts and eventually moving to the Village where he owns several homes and an art gallery. Fisher opened the South Village Gallery this past October and to his dismay visitors just trickled in. As he analyzed traffic to the area, he found that most visitors to the Village of the Arts parked their cars in the main section of the Village, visited a few  different galleries, then headed home. He realized he had to make the south end of the village a …

Oversized artwork on Sarasota's Island Park is out to celebrate diversity thanks to student and professional work from Sarasota and Manatee county students. The exhibit is called "Embracing Our Differences" and it's a project of Coexistence, Inc., a local non-profit that began in 2004. Accepting the individual and respecting their culture is humanity. But diversity does not create a cohesive society. That is what education has failed to understand or does it want to subvert that? Common needs, like education, experiences that all can relate to across the board is what makes a community, a county, a state or a country. Not individual ones.   more ›

No Kill Museum Could Come to Bradenton

National artist in talks with Bradenton and Manatee officials to create a museum featuring portraits of 5,500 dogs that died in animal shelters

Mark Barone and Marina Dervan want to help make Manatee County the epi-center of the no-kill movement. The couple has spent the past nine months on their own private no-kill mission. Barone, who has worked as an artist for three decades and is known for working to rehab decaying cities, is painting the portraits of 5,500 dogs. It will take him two years working every day for at least 12 hours to complete the portraits of all of the dogs killed in one day in the United States. He is averaging about 70 a week, sketching out about 50 at a time and painting them side by side. Barone paints portraits of dogs that have been killed in shelters. He's found their photos in memorials put up by rescue groups who try to save those dogs. Eventually he …

Spay and neuter are an integral part of the no-kill movement. I have written about this in the past, but the no-kill movement is a multiple pronged approach that includes a huge dose of spay and neuter. Every animal that comes to Manatee Animal Services is spayed and neutered before it can be adopted. All of the rescue groups spay and neuter the pets they adopt. If this couple is successful in …   more ›
