Graduate Profile: Philip Jones, Ready for Take-off
This week saw another group of students graduate from Southeastern Guide Dogs with their new guide dogs. Here is the story of just one of these extraordinary teams!
As an air traffic controller, Philip Jones was used to being in control, after all, it’s part of the title. So when Macular Degeneration took his sight 2 ½ years ago, Philip did what he could to continue to be independent.
At the Lighthouse for the Blind and the Veteran’s Administration in West Palm Beach he learned the independent living skills needed to get by as a visually impaired person and he also learned about guide dogs. After researching a few schools Philip made the decision to come to Southeastern Guide Dogs because he knew he wanted a dog that had been raised in the south. He had also met someone with a guide from Southeastern and was impressed with the team.
Upon arrival on campus, Philip was paired with a loveable black goldador named Hank. Of Hank, Philip says “He’s a very active dog with lots of puppy in him and he likes being out, not cooped up, so we have hardly spent any time in our room.” It seems just fine for Philip, as he too seems to enjoy being out and interacting with anyone who happens to be passing through.
When the pair gets home, Philip is looking forward to continuing to learn to work together as a team. As an outdoorsman, Philip expects to spend a good deal of time exploring the many lakes in St. Cloud, Florida.
He’s even started to think that since Hank is so smart, perhaps he can teach him how to drive the golf cart. So watch out if you are near Center Lake and be sure to steer clear of the golf cart with the big black goldador at the wheel!
