VIDEO: Manatee Flings Poo-Filled Water On Reporters

It was a crappy day at the office for reporters this week covering the arrival of manatees at the South Florida Museum.

How did a few cameramen and women's Thursday go? Pretty crappy.

Earlier this week, Bradenton Patch brought you the arrival of two manatees being rehabilitated at the South Florida Museum, but it there was a part of the story we left out until now.

If you're easily grossed out, stop now, but given the headline, you know what you are in for.

One of the manatees, Longo, was a little nervous during the ride from Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo and had defecated in his harness blanket, which you would expect animals to do.

This wasn't an issue until Longo was ready to be placed in a holding tank at the South Florida Museum. With several Bradenton and Tampa-area media outlets on hand, the TV crews and newspapers wanted an up-close look of Longo being lowered into the tank and lined up along a ledge.

Fox 13, Bay News 9, SNN Local News, the Bradenton Herald and ABC 7 were all there getting the shot, but they didn't expect this type of shot.

Longo was a little excited when he first touched the water, splashing violently and as you see in the video, the water quickly turns brown. Yep, you know what that is.

The brown water was splashed everywhere, landing heavily on the cameramen and women's clothes, camera, arms and hair. I guess that's a version of a manatee's revenge. It was worse than changing a diaper after a toddler lets loose.

I feel for the South Florida Museum staff who were in that tank while this all unfolded, getting the brunt of the impact, and then having to re-enter the tank to let the second manatee, Cheeno, into the tank. Cheeno was clean, and didn't freak out like Longo did.

So where was this Patch reporter? I stood on the other side of the ledge in the door frame of the bathroom. I knew what was under Longo and as soon as he started splashing, I quickly ducked back into the bathroom, and managed only to get the tiniest dab of manatee dung on my right elbow.

If my camera belonged to Patch instead of me, I might have sacrificed myself for the sake of the shot. But I didn't have to.

Thanks to ABC 7 and Fox 13 for posting the video and sacrificing your clothes.
