Two Trash Collection Workers Hit by Teen Driver

The workers were putting out warning signals, after their truck stalled. The Jeep SUV failed to slow down, according to investigators.

A Waste Management worker is hospitalized in serious condition and a second worker had minor injuries, after a teenager driver hit the victims as they were placing warning cones in the road.

  • Jerry Johnson, 40, was taken to Blake Hospital where he remains in serious condition.
  • Leo Blackman, 36, had minor injuries from the accident, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

Daniel Drakulich, 19, of Sarasota was cited for careless driving after he hit the two workers who were placing warning signals around the truck that had stalled out on 51st Street East, near 45th Avenue East, according to a FHP report.

The Waste Management truck was facing northbound. The two garbage collectors got out of the truck to place warning signals around the vehicle, when a 2009 Jeep SUV travelling south failed to slow down on the road.

The left front of the Jeep hit both workers and the front of the Waste Management truck and then spun counter clockwise. There were no skidmarks at the scene, according to the FHP report.

The article doesn't report the seriousness of the man's injuries. Mr. Johnson won't ever be going back to work as a result of this "accident".

Really? It's a big green and white truck that takes up the whole lane, and you didn't see it? Was that text message, phone call or song you couldn't find on your mp3 player more important than Mr. Johnsons' lively hood, way of life or the people who depend on him?
I know Mr. Drakulich nobody is as important as you!

I lost a friend this year that got hit by a garbage truck on Bayshore Gardens Pkwy. It killed him. I know this may really upset some people but maybe the Garbage truck workers should be trained better in safety. I understand this accident was not their fault but it seems like if they were in the road putting out safety cones they should have been on the lookout for these horrible drivers. I know this may strick a nerve in some people and I'm sorry for that... It just seems to me like there are way too many preventable accidents. Jerry and Leo you are in my thoughts and prayers as is my dead friend Kevin Halloran.

Yep it struck a nerve. Sorry buddies you should have been more careful. Really??? All the guys wanted to do was put up warning cones (safety) for the other drivers on the road letting them know they weren't moving! They had yellow shirts with 2" silver stripes on so everyone could see them(safety)! They looked both ways before getting out of the truck and I'll gaurantee their feet never crossed the center line(for safety reasons at waste management that will get you fired quicker than anything).
I've worked at Waste Management for over 20 yrs. and safety is drilled into us on a daily basis, every morning before we start our trucks we have a safety meeting. Being a garbage man is the fifth most dangerous profession and WM recognises this and teaches us on a daily basis the hazards to be on the look out for. But when you are out of the truck and someone veers into your lane and you can't get out of the way because your truck is blocking your escape there just isn't any safety training that will help.
Now here's a question. If it would have been a group of kids getting on the school bus this guy plowed into would you have the same opinion?

Ok first off Pam, I'm sorry about your friend, but don't comment on something you have know clue about. Jerry and his wife are very close longtime friends of mine and i know he did everything correctly. He has 2 beautiful girls and a wonderfully beautiful wife to live for and there's no way he would risk his life/family like this. He almost and still could lose his life (he already lost both of his legs) all because some stupid teenager wasn't watching what he was doing. Seriously, this Daniel kid needs to have more then his license taken away. I personally think he should have to face Jerry's wife and daughters and see exactly what he has put them through. Then he needs to also face the Leo and his family. I really hope he doesn't get just a slap on the wrist for this. Daniels stupid actions have affected more lives that what he realizes.

Mr. Johnson is my cousin and he is still in serious but stable condition. His family will have a long road ahead of them, but we have faith that everything will turn out fine. This was a horrible accident and I'm sure the young man who hit him feels horrible, but until all factors are known let please lets not turn this into a argument. This is especially hard on the family because we lost another family member due to a drunk driver. We have survived a tragedy like this before and what is important is that we stick together as a family and continue to pray for his recovery. We can play the blame game later but lets focus our prayers on the family and his small girls who just want to see their daddy for Christmas. Please pray for our Miracle because we need it.

Sounds like a terrible situation for all parties involved. My prayers go out Jerry, Leo and Daniel, because I am sure all the families involved must be struggling with this what happened and what was done.
