Bicyclist Killed After Going Over Desoto Bridge in a Crash

The Bradenton man was riding his bike across the bridge before dawn, when a car struck him from behind.

A Bradenton man was killed Monday morning after the bike he was riding across the DeSoto Bridge was hit by a car and pushed over the retaining wall, according to a report from the Palmetto police department.

Adon Newsome, 44, landed in the Manatee River, where he was found dead. The Palmetto Police Department is investigating the early morning crash.

Newsome was traveling south across the bridge at about 4:40 a.m. Sunday when Gustavo Ramirez, Jr. 35, of Palmetto came up behind him. Ramirez was driving a 1997 Saturn, according to the police report. The car hit the bicycle and the impact caused Newsome and his bike to go over the retaining wall, off the bridge and into the Manatee River.
